I just came across this post, that describes in detail the steps I used to have to take to get a GPSS program running in 1966 on an IBM 7094 hidden away in a nondescript IBM Victoria office block. The only bits missing were the tight security checks that had to be passed before filling out all the  paperwork and depositing the precious (huge) stack of cards.

In case you wonder GPSS was an IBM program that enabled the user to set up simulation models of any ‘Monte Carlo queueing’ activity such as for example the optimum number of checkouts required at supermarkets. At the time I was a young engineer running it to get the design parameters for a new jetty complex handling everything from barges to supertankers.

Ah the old IBM main frames. The System 360 was about to be released at that time and even they were batch processors back then 😁

I learned to program on an IBM 1966, then upgraded to a 2966 when I went to BAe. IBM mainframe and COBOL. Happy days 🙂

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

Ah COBOL, so many systems are still built on it, and so few people know how to program it that there are still cases of companies having to drag old pharts out of retirement to fix interface problems or help with migrating the programs to an on-line system. Remembering how some of the programmers used to cram data/flags into spare fields with minimal/no documentation the problems are unsurprising!
