It seems as though MS are trying to get all Home users doing a fresh install to log into a Microsoft Account rather than using a Local Account as the option is now hidden. There is a fairly involved way round it however – see https://tinyurl.com/typt8l5

I am now of the opinion that for your average Joe the plus points of having a Microsoft account outweigh the negative. Lets be honest, the negatives are all really privacy concerns and in this day and age they are out of the window (no pun intended) anyway. There are few things you can get that is effectively free that isn’t using you as the product and increasingly things you pay for too.

The biggest advantage is having a data backup via One Drive. So many people just do not backup anything even after having a data loss at some time. The online versions of Office are more than up to the job for the needs of most people – I use them myself as part of O365 – as is the Windows mail app.

If you want anything more than a “consumer” experience you need Pro, which is easy enough and cheap enough to get hold of these days.

Cheers for that link- I’ve been meaning to resolve this on the wife’s laptop. It appeared a while ago after an update – asking to be logged into the MS account before continuing, with no visible way round it. There’s no real point as it’s only a FB, email, Solitaire, shopping ( not buying ) machine.

I’ll hit that next time I’ve got a quiet morning.👍👍

            Hi David

I always use an offline account. I have no need of one as I back up everything I really need to a NAS box and Onedrive.

Good article though and I have printed it off for use when I do another clean install sometime in the future

Most of us here are in the same boat, it’s the great British public who don’t do backups 😀 and it’s them that expect I can rescue those precious photos and get pissy when I can’t!

Classic was a laptop from the sister of a friend of my wife, “it just stopped working”. Hard drive was OK, got the data off but a red sticky residue was the give away. She finally admitted a glass of red was involved in the sudden stoppage.

I assume that a local account is still available when setting up new users.

My original objection to M$’s insistence on using their Account as an Administrator, was that it was insecure as it revealed half of the log-on info. As few will use a random 14 character, for most people the sign-on becomes a busted flush that even a weak cracker such as ‘John the Ripper’ can quickly mash.

At the time I could not see a way of getting around the stupid M$ requirement, so I went along with using my hotmail address to initially set things up. Once done I set up my REAL admin account and demoted the M$ account to a limited user. Microsoft will sometimes barf at this and say that my hotmail data needs attentiom, but in the main it just works.

Obviously this method means that the intrusive M$ data handling routines are still there but locked safely away.

At the moment im using a “Windows Hello” 4 digit pin to login to my PC which is more secure than the Auto login I normally use at home. I recently had to change my hotmail password but the pin continued to log me in to my PC just fine.
