Ordered a Moto G7 this week, it arrived last night.
Today I see the Moto G8 Plus has been announced and will be available in the UK from Monday!

Not opened the G7 yet, so I think I’ll send it back to Amazon and await the G8 and when Amazon/somewhere gets it in stock!

I can’t find any mention of 5G anywhere so I’m guessing it isn’t. That would be a massive bonus for the price.

Can’t let you know for sure if it’s 5G, as Tesco aren’t on the 5G bandwagon yet. Not sure if any of the later 8 series will be 5G – it’s a possibility, as they have the Power version which is slightly different to the rest, so it’s possible.
Interesting to note that the Amazon pages says they’ll only charge when shipped, yet the payment has already gone through ಠ_ŕ˛

November 3, 2019 at 7:04 pm #37970Haven’t been able to have much play over the weekend but have got it setup and had a minor play.
It’s got fairly minimal bloatware as you might expect for a Moto G series. The Moto actions are always good and no difference here (the torch one is usually handy).
Takeaways at the minute – the microSD card does not appear to be supported in formatting as internal storage. Not sure if that’s a factor of my SD card or just in general. Not a major issue, but I wanted it, as it encrypts the microSD card, whereas the standard version now is unencrypted, so if I lose the phone, the data on the SD card is available to anyone. I was going to use if a backup of my PC, but that might be out of the window now (it’s a Sandisk 128GB one so not a cheapo nasty card). I can’t encrypt it either from the menu, so it looks like Motorola have disabled that for whatever reason.
Other than that, it’s fairly standard. I’ll grab some photos tomorrow – there’s some AI for the camera, so I’ll try it with and without that and see what the difference is.

I’d guess that Government pressure is at the root of this. Probably it was an unholy alliance of Western and Chinese Governments bewailing that it would make it harder to spy on the populace.

Doing work for the MOD as I do, they want everything that isn’t behind lock and key encrypted. That includes devices bolted to buildings on very secure sites (you can put 2 and 2 together). Somewhat at odds with Government policy.
The Deference industry doesn’t have secret squirrel phones, if they exist they will be for James Bond Types, they use the same kit we all use on the same networks. Of course there are software management tools on top of all this, but if features are blocked at a hardware level there’s nothing they can do.
November 4, 2019 at 6:16 pm #37984That’s a divorce for Lenovo and myself, if they do that for my next Tablet purchase. The Tab3-8 is beginning to show its age somewhat: slowing up, SD storage reaching the point at which I would be looking at a 64Gb card soon. I will revert to the Hudl I think as main tablet, only using it as long term storage atm. It takes a 64 GB card and is really quite as good as the Lenovo in many ways. I can appreciate the reasons regarding security and encryption for business and military uses, but not for most of ordinary users. I’m already p****d off with SWMBO’s Lenovo laptop for several reasons: can’t see me ever buying one for myself.
I do clear caches and data regularly, but I have loaded the Tab with all kinds of goodies. Next one will be a more expensive item with more internal and external storage. Unless some bright spark finds a way to stuff it all directly into my brain. Not helpful though, considering the parlous state of my memory!

I’m only exposed to that in a minor way – for cadets, as we use MOD resources, we’ve had to switch to using the Outlook app for accessing emails, as it can force the phone to be encrypted etc. The phone is encrypted, but the microSD card isn’t (and can’t be). Still impressed that cadets allow us to do BYOD to, but then I guess if they didn’t, they don’t have the money to support us and nothing would get done!
I saw somewhere some excuses saying that it prevents poor performance on the phone when people use the wrong micro SD cards.
@Bob – SD card is present, but just can’t be encrypted, or used as internal storage. It can function as a storage medium fine though. Beats the Oneplus, which doesn’t even have an SD slot.
Only managed two photos today with it – one with the AI and the other without. Can’t tell any difference!
I’ll try and get some night mode shots tomorrow.
Speed wise, everything is good enough, no major issues. Missing my Airpods, but I can link those up when I get round to it.
Default app list is fairly sparse (though can’t get rid of Facebook ಠ_ಠ). Android was a bit of a faff getting on to the eduroam network at work, but got there in the end. Managed to pair my Garmin Vivoactive 4S (though it took me a while to realise it wasn’t connecting as it was still connected to my iPhone!)

Ah – I understand that Chris. But if I find my next prospective Tab won’t allow Internal storage for an SD, it will affect my choice. Although I have just recently rediscovered a tricky little 60 GB USB Slider gadget which has one USB 3 connector and the other end will connect to the tablet. I was going to use that to install music tracks to the tablet and phone, then forgot about it. That will be good for overspill tablet storage in the desktop.

Bob, you use encryption everyday on your PC – for example HTTPS encrypts your communications to your ISP, without it you would never dare to purchase anything on line.
Everyone would object like hell if a Government said that all door locks should be capable of being opened by a Government held key, as they needed to be able to pry about in people’s belongings. If the security services had good reason backed by individual court orders then I would have no objection to such prying on my communications. However currently it is pretty much a blanket permission with even low-level council workers having a right to go on fishing trips for information. link

It’s not a deal breaker for me, but it’s inconsiderate, considering Android supports it!
Incidentally, work have just purchased me an iPad Pro 11″ – I’m intending to do something similar to your idea now that that the iPad can properly access external storage, but I gather that it still has major limitations (I assume I won’t be able to play music off the USB drive for example), but it’ll be used as a general laptop and will do for the most part (carrying out site inspections and recording meeting notes!)

November 6, 2019 at 5:21 pm #38042Chris – this is the later version of my tiny USB 3 – to – Android device flash drive. Amazing that they can get up to 256 GB in those little things now. Really chuffed that I rediscovered it: I can either use it in the car’s Media audio port or in the tablet. Can’t use it in the Sony Xperia, as it has a USB C port. Better watch out for that if you decide to get one. I don’t know why you wouldn’t be able to play music directly off it though.

As I was looking to use it with an Apple device and Apple don’t allow fun đ Well, with that one I wouldn’t as the new iPad is USB-C, as is the Moto G8.
