      Did you know…

If you have a fairly recent UHD smart TV with the BBC iPlayer app installed then you can go to the settings option and have a look at the BBC’s experimental output ?

There is an option to try the beta version of the player and one to look at a high log gamma loop. My TV allows me to enable HDR+ when viewing either of them. I dont even get the option when viewing standard content ?

If you want to watch the iPlayer HLG content on a Samsung TV then “fairly recent” means 2017 or newer. The 2016 TV’s had a firmware update to enable HLG playback as promised but they do not support the European DVB standard the BBC is using for transmission. You will know if your TV is not compatible because you will not be able to receive the content ?

I notice they’ve changed their “normal” video compression on iPlayer as well. Not so long back it was variable bit rate and “best” would be 720p at typically 1GB ber hour. The ones I’ve grabbed recently from get_iplayer and youtube-dl are still 720p but a fixed bit rate (around 5 Mb/s) and around double the file size.

I wonder why the Beeb went with H264 rather than the smaller file sizes of HEVC  for no discernable loss in quality. HEVC  vs H264 (comparison)   The other possible advantage is that the Turing HEVC codec is FOSS.

I guess it was dictated by the Smart TV consortium.
