We are off to Manc airport in the morning, overnight stay at Carlton hotel, flight to Budapest at daft o’clock. Cruise down the Danube through Hungary, Slovakia and Austria, back to Budapest along the other bank, staying at different river ports each day. Big Anniversary on the 5th, boat apparently has a big night set up for us. Not our first River Cruise, we love them, prefer the river to the sea cruises. Hope it’s not the last! I may be offline for a while.

July 31, 2019 at 8:57 pm #35387Have a good trip Bob, especially the 5th. You should be fine for roving internet data as all EU.
July 31, 2019 at 9:35 pm #35389Off tomorrow as well. Day trip to Margate ?
July 31, 2019 at 9:37 pm #35390Its outside the M25. Do I have to change any money and will my mobile work ???
July 31, 2019 at 11:24 pm #35391Have a god holiday.
The more you meet people the more you understand why Noah took animals instead of humans
July 31, 2019 at 11:37 pm #35392Have a god holiday.
You mean this is a religious retreat for Bob ? ?
Never trust an atom - they make up everything !
July 31, 2019 at 11:45 pm #35393Do I have to change any money and will my mobile work
Mobiles work nicely here ( just 5 miles outside Margate ) and they still accept coins and folding stuff, but we are also up to date with lots of new ways of parting tourists from their hard-earned!!???
Joking aside, hope you enjoy the sights – we take them all for granted. Where are you hoping to look at, Turner Contemporary, Dreamland, or just cruise the beach. There are some much nicer beaches other than the Main Sands – Minnis Bay is one of those – in Birchington, you turn left for Minnis and right for Margate.
Take the opportunity for some Fish and Chips – they’re great round here.??

We might be out East, but we’re not in Souk country!!!
August 1, 2019 at 11:28 am #35397Got advance tickets for Dreamland and the beach is on the cards as is fish and chips. We may visit the shell cave but I am travelling with my friend Angela and her 10yo daughter so it depends on her really ?
August 1, 2019 at 12:30 pm #35398You will have set off by now, but if you get this before you return have a good one and enjoy every minute.
If you do not get this before you return I trust it all went well and you enjoyed it all you could.
Either way I trust you return refreshed and ready for what is to come. Hopefully that will all be good.
August 1, 2019 at 3:16 pm #35399I’m with the rest of them. Have a good one. Let us know what the river cruise is like. SWMBO keeps wanting to go on one.

August 14, 2019 at 8:23 am #35603Looks like you had a good time Bob.
With regards train travel we used Railbookers for our Geneva / Venice holiday. They know they’re stuff with regards rail travel and will sort you out. They also do specific pre / post cruise trips so have hotels in strategic places. Can’t fault the hotels they found us.
If you sign up you’ll be invited to a monthly online presentation (which you can view independently if you miss it live) that concentrates on a geographic area. This months was Scandanavia, last month Switzerland. No hard sell and you can ask questions.
You’ll find their packages are in fact suggestions, it’s all up for customisation. There are no specific start days, go whenever suits you. Do the route in reverse, stay an extra day somewhere, they can sort it out. Will be using them next year the question is where to go? Might have to get the Bernese Oberland out of my system and go back to Basel as well (last time there 1973).
August 14, 2019 at 8:45 am #35606Dave, that looks like an interesting option for those with easy access to the initial starting point and enough fitness to sustain the momentum. I have to admit that heaving luggage about onto and off trains would worry me these days. The challenge of using trains to London hospitals, even without luggage did not encourage me to think of that as the start of a holiday option.
Perhaps, we are just past travelling holidays at the moment, but for those who can rise to the challenge it looks to be an interesting option to have.
August 14, 2019 at 1:37 pm #35608Richard, all over Europe – including here – I’ve seen help available for people with mobility issues in action at major stations. It is possible to pre book this at most places (probably a good idea) and I’m sure Railbookers etc. would be only to happy to help.
The major routes are much more disabled friendly these days and even double decker trains have seats at platform level. I think if you planned carefully with the help of a rail specialist who knows their stuff and has the contacts you would find it viable. It may limit you to the major cities (forget Venice ? ) but for instance you can now get the Eurostar straight into Amsterdam Centraal.
Paris is a major hub for the high speed trains southern France and east (Black Forest, Switzerland) and Brussels for Northern Germany. Changing at Brussels is a doddle, same station. Paris may be better with an overnight rather than rush across town, but that’s what taxis are for!
August 14, 2019 at 11:12 pm #35621Thanks for all the good wishes guys, the trip was wonderful, but the return spoiled it. I posted elsewhere that Budapest airport had a shortage of baggage handlers and we had a 1¾ hour wait at check in. Should have been longer, but I informed the Jet2 agent that he would be faced with two unconscious and ill customers if he didn’t act. We were ‘fast-tracked’ which became a joke, as the Security team had never heard of a parastomal hernia and thought I was hiding something nasty under my abdominal bulge. Flight delayed by 1½ hours, big storms over the Pennines on the drive home, last lap of which was a huge diversion around Scunthorpe after Highways had closed 2 junctions of the M180 whilst we were away. Of course they neglected to install signage about this, until we actually drove onto the M180.
The boat “The William Wordsworth”* was great: staff, food, amenities were all really good. A mix of Hungarian, Slovakian and Indonesian crew but all were very good. I did not think much of Budapest, but loved the ancient Hungarian capital of Hungary, Esztergom. It was a very cheerful place, dilapidated in parts but not as full of cosmopolitan tourists as Budapest. Its people were friendly and most spoke English. One unlikely-looking biker type, scruffy, long hair, insisted on taking us to a place we wanted to see and told us all about it in broken English: obviously very proud of his hometown. We didn’t take part in any organised tours, as we like to get out into the place and trust locals to tell us what we needed to know. That way we were able to talk about places that others had missed. I hate those Guides and the audio sets they supply: a fast, garbled commentary with no time to stop and take in details. All in all, had a great time.
Dave, thanks for that Railbookers link. Very interesting and we will look closely at that next year, although we are currently also looking at Wales, which we both love but have not seen for too long. Maybe Wales in May, a Euro trip in August again. We like Bruges, or Brugge if you take the Fleming pronunciation.
The boat:
Moored in Linz, a city we loved, more than Vienna which had huge pedestrian works and was a bit like many Brit Cities today, dirty, polluted and full of foreigners(!)

*All the Riviera new boats are named after British literary figures. William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, Robert Burns, Thomas Hardy, Emily Brontë. Newly- launched is the MS George Elliott, which pleases my Gert as she is one of 3 sisters born at the George Elliott hospital, Nuneaton.
