I recently bought a SumUp credit card reader for the Legion that I go to. Other members have been doing physical things like painting and as I’m knackered I can’t really help so I thought that I’d drag them into the modern age.

I got an Alcatel Pixi 4 from O2 for £10 delivered to use in conjunction with the card reader. No need for a SIM as the club has WiFi.

Set up an account with no problems and tried a test charge of £1. Kept getting a message saying ‘you’re using a card reader with the wrong configuration, use another reader or contact support’. So I emailed them expecting a wait of a few days.

The next morning I had an email explaining that the card reader is faulty and they would send a replacement unit. That was Wednesday. Today I had the replacement unit and sent the faulty one back. That’s pretty impressive by itself but I didn’t even order it from them as it was cheaper on the Rymans site!

I’m glad to say the replacement works a treat and the app is quick even on the slightly clunky Pixi 4. The steward will have the app on his iPhone whatever  it is but he’s not full time so another phone is needed for the relief staff to use. Dead easy to use the app and the reader is very responsive to NFC.

So far it’s 9/10 from me for SumUp.

It is great when something works the way it should and the supplier stands behind with active support. It can be hard to get real support so a story like yours rises up and surprises people.

I use the iZettle reader at work. It’s excellent.

Steve, I looked at them. And loads of others.

Realistically the card payment turn over won’t be huge, it’ll take a while for people to actually believe they take cards!!!

It should build as the weeks and the summer skittle league go on.

I can’t recall exactly why I went with SumUp over any of the others but I think it was the cheapest cost per transaction.

I’ve also bagged a Twitter account, I may well regret that one…….

They use a World Pay reader at the Legion in Whitchurch but I believe it’s part of the epos system they have.

I took the iZettle one as its part of the epos system I decided on, alone its 1.7% but if you use their Pro eops service (use it for inventory tracking etc..) the price is 1.2%

Still not the cheapest around, however given the pub never took cards, card payments are slow, but rising. Currenlty at about 10% of revenue.

What I do like about iZettle and I imagine all the new card readers is their speed. So much faster than the tradition style card terminals. I’m happy with iZettle.

I have a few taxi drivers that drink in my place, and they have bought the reader and use it just linked to their phone after seeing mine in action.

Thier is a handful of these companies doing similar products all around the same price. The more traditional ones are around 0.8% but with a subscription cost. Now if my card payments ever went big enough I’d consider changing. But I’m happy with what I have atm.

For people like me who invoice rather than do live selling, I use Wave Invoicing.

It’s totally free and very competent with mobile apps too. It’s absolutely brilliant. There is an option to take credit cards and customers get a link to do so on their invoice. You can also take payments manually over the phone which a lot of readers won’t do. It’s 1.4% = 20p for European currencies but you have to wait 7 days. That doesn’t bother me as I find people pay much faster, often on the nail.

What I really like is the choice that’s out there now. Years ago it was what the bank offered and that was it.

Lloyds wanted £15 a month rental, minimum of £50 a week sales (if that wasn’t met it was an extra £15 a month) and 3% of every sale.

With SumUp the setup costs including the Pixi 4, the card reader and postage was £32. They take 1.69% of every transaction. Unless you’r doing mega amounts of sales and can then negotiate with the bank you must be barking mad to accept their terms.
