Yesterday the mem’sahib and I had a day out in Skeggy. At one point we had a very nice cappuccino in a back street, rather raffish coffee bar which always has some interesting characters. Two youngish blokes were sat at a table, having a low conversation and a laugh. One wore dark glasses and had a large black Labrador between their feet, snoring softly. A young -er – lady entered, very skimpily dressed, wearing an enormous ‘front shelf’ with very little coverage. She asked the proprietor after her husband’s whereabouts and obviously received the wrong answer, so gave an obscene description of her husband’s probable location and current activities, which she believed involved another female person.
The two lads were speechless, staring at her with much amusement. She verbally attacked the one in dark glasses, “Never seen t**s before, have ya? Get a load of these!” – and opened her clothing to reveal a couple of massive norks. The other lad was so quick – “He was born blind, can’t see them.”
Putting together the dog and the dark bins, she immediately made 5 from 2+2, apologised profusely and offered “the poor lad” a grope, which he took up with alacrity, after first asking her to guide his hands. She gave him both barrels (!) then sat at another table to replace her clothing and order a cuppa. The two lads got up to leave and the lad with the dark specs said at the door, “That top is the wrong colour for you!” – and left. She was purple in the face and screamed at his mate, “Thought you said he was born blind? What about his dog?”
“He got his sight back before we started school. And it’s not his dog,” said the lad “He’s mine: come on Satch!” At which the Lab hauled himself to his feet and followed them to the door.
I am still laughing now at the memory. The woman was still sitting there when I left, obviously very upset. Best put down I have seen for a very long time.

They’ve probably been perfecting that since they were kids.

April 29, 2019 at 8:18 pm #32984Bob, thank you that was a great way to get some mirth and raised spirits after a number of ‘difficult days’. SWMBO is back on another round of chemo two weeks on and two weeks off and tablets every 12 hours, it is a really hard schedule. Since I am up perhaps 4 to 6 times a night anyway, days that start at 5:30 a.m. can be a challenge. We were at the local hospital until 1:o a.m. on Thursday due to a reaction to an infusion that goes with the chemo, up again bright and early to deal with the dogs , breakfast, her chemo and then go to a funeral of someone who had died from cancer before rinsing and repeating for the evening. The funeral was very well attended with people having come from far and wide, some well over 200 miles away. He was clearly well respected in the clubs and societies he had joined supported and served. As a result many turned out with their full dress regalia and sang and prayed round the burial, I did not have the nerve to film it, it felt a bit too personal and in a way sacred, though the sight of 40 or 50 people forming a ring round a grave praying, reading and singing hymns was hardly a secret event. I am not sure that grave yard had seen the likes of the event for many a long year, if ever. I have some lingering regrets at not having a copy for my wife our daughter myself and for his widow.
You are a damned good writer of your tales so a warm, rich thank you. I feel I needed that story and it was very well told. I just hope you are going as well with your treatments as you are with you yarns.
April 30, 2019 at 6:55 pm #33000Very glad to inject a little humour into this space guys, I will remember that one for a long time, likewise hoping I have the long time to remember it and the working neurons to retain it! I thanked those two lads when I saw them at the seafront later. The Lab’s real owner said “The dog talks, don’t you Satch?” “Arfff!” said the dog “What did he say?” asked my missus. “Oh no, don’t encourage these comedians again today,” I said “let’s find somewhere to eat!”
Richard I was happy to spread a little humorous relief into your present troubles. For myself, at whatever future time my clock stops, I would not want a performance like that. I prefer my choice of a Field Of Rest, cardboard box (literally) and a tree planted over me. I have chosen the place with a small company and I wish to be recycled by the various bugs and creatures in the soil. Family will be left instructions not to weep and moan, but to remember some daft thing I said or did and smile or laugh. I did not live the always daft, unpredictable life I have lived, to be mourned by those I loved. The field is huge, protected, bought specifically for the purpose by the company and it’s beautiful. It’s far enough away from my village and family, that no one has to stand over a sapling in a patch of grass and lay flowers, which are much happier staying where they grow.
My treatment is almost done thank you, now down to just medication, most of which is for life. I hope you and your wife have a similar good result, best wishes to you both.
