This is me being super lazy. But I know some own will know this off their top of their heads.
I’ve just bought a new domain, what is the best and ceapest way to set up an email addy for it and for it to be managed via Gmail.
At this point, I don’t care about a website. I just want a decent email addy.
March 24, 2019 at 5:18 am #32039You could probably do it free with some sort of ad-sponsored hosting and email forwarding but I think Google Apps is the way to go – prices seem very reasonable given the storage that comes with it too.
March 24, 2019 at 7:46 am #32041I have an Office 365 business account and changed the MX records for giffordsystems.co.uk to have Microsoft as the mail provider. It’s been working a treat with Outlook on all devices.
I believe with g suite you need to transfer the whole domain.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

Especally as I’m setting alot of stuff up atm.
I’ll look into g-suite and 365 biz. But would be fine by me.

I am uncertain what you mean by ‘decent’ in your last sentence. Are you seeking an address that is memorable -or- one that adds prestige -or- for some other reason. I found a way a while back that folks often have problems recalling even the simplest of domain names. If you are not merely after acquiring perceived prestige may I make a suggestion that I have given to many.
Pretty much everyone has no problem remembering ‘gmail’. The comments so far surely evidence such. My recommendation is therefore a gmail address but tweaking the preface for example in the following fashion “FredBloggsdirect@gmail.com”. I assure you that if you set up a gmail account in this fashion no-one who knows your name will ever forget your email address. Its a case of – Wanna email me? No problem. Simply email <me>direct@gmail.com I’ve never found a better way of making recall so damned easy.

That’s why I moved my mail server from Fast Hosts to Microsoft.

If I was dealing with a business that did that, I would be less than impressed and possibly take my business elsewhere. To me that seems unprofessional. I’d possibly consider it as reasonable for a sole trader or handyman, but if you were trading with that, I’d consider my details to not necessarily be secure.

I used gmail for years, but now I’ve got a ltd I think a real email is more professional.
Luckily I got a great domain name. The pub is called The Glanglasfor, locally its known as The Glan. TheGlan.co.uk was free and cost me a whole 88p for the first year. So i’ll be using that once I set it up.
Atm I have 100 and one other things to do first.
But Contact@TheGlan etc… Fits in well with the name, and the type of place it is. What do you reckon Dave, Does it fit the pub?

No problem. It was just that your opening post gave no indication it was for business that was why I said I wasn’t sure what you meant by a decent addy. I certainly wouldn’t recommend the trick I did for any business purpose not even for a sole trader because GDPR makes doing it far, far too risky. Its really only a useful trick for private individuals acting as such.

It sort of fell In my lap, and is a free house. But I’m now cash poor lol. But I have loads of beer. I officially take over on April 1st, so I may be a fool! Lol.
Dave is setting me up some decent cameras, as the system in place now leaves alto to be desired.
Back on topic, went for the tablet based epos system, so I grappled a cheap ipad air 2 referb only 16gb but its gonna have two apps on it, the till app and a an app for my cameras, but that will be for back up use. I’m gonna get a second cheap ipad for that when I actually have some cash.
I’ve never been poorer and I’ve inherited 3 staff and a load of bills. Wrapped it all into a ltd Co incase it all goes wrong.
March 25, 2019 at 7:04 pm #32095If you get involved in ‘food’ at your pub, then watch out for portion size and wastage. These are the areas where you can make or lose money.
Wastage is the area where the biggest defalcations take place. Thirty or so years ago, a large multinational got out of its depth by buying up a chain of hotels (and knew naff all about the business). An auditor friend of mine was called in and said that he had never seen such supposedly bad control of portion size and over-ordering. As a result, a couple of dozen large hams/day would be written off as wastage into the chef’s car boots. Plus of course steaks and other easily sold items!
btw – Good luck with your new 24/7 venture. Many of my relatives ran pubs – socially rewarding (if you do not become an alcoholic, as many of my relatives did), but b-hard work!
March 25, 2019 at 7:41 pm #32097Also be careful if you are planning to show “unorthodox” sporting events. A lot of pubs here been done in the last year or so -£8,000 fines each. Only a couple still doing it now and on a who-you-know basis with doors locked and shutters down.
Really wish you all the best – I think ironically the pubs that haven’t shut have a better chance now that so many have been driven out of business. Certainly true in Plaistow – only four left out of probably 15 or so a decade ago – but they have hooverdup the punters from the others and look OK for now. Probably a different landscape where you are.

BL, Steve knows all about the Sky police ? Steve looked at Sky’s “free” WiFi offering as it seemed an easy way to sort the problem – the current share the Technicolor router’s SSID has to stop. Customers only get a 15 minute session through a highly advert strewn gateway, the landlord can’t use it for business and the installation costs are astronomic. Their phones would be embedded in the TV on the wall by 2PM! A Ubiquiti AP will sort that, the £60 300N will more than do the job and Steve can keep till, CCTV monitor and customers apart and still have a spare channel.

Sky bend you over as it is. I vowed never to go back to sky when I got shut of it about 6 years ago. Then multi room was costing me about £115pm. I felt ribbed then I’d kill for thst price now. Its about 850pm Inc vat now ?
There is no way we recoup that in the space of the few games per month, but if you don’t have it your regulars will wonder and maybe not come back. Sky trully have pubs over the barrel.
Also the pub is a blue pub! Evey weekend they meet before the game, have a few then get a coach to the games, then have a few when they get home. So I’m gonna be wishing for blue wind from now on, keeping them in the mood. What had my life become! I’m a traitor to my own kind lol.
They know I’m a red, and ad we may win Thr league this year, I’m playing it cool, as if I rub their nose in it, and we did go on to win, I’m sure a fair few would take their business else where.
Wouldn’t be so bad if I had a few year relationship with them, but atm I’m trying to fly under the radar in thst respect.
There will never be food ed. No room, no kitchen. Its a proper horseracing type of boozer. Mind the building has a huge (I mean huge) emty cafe on floor two. That may be opening up at some point, but thst won’t have anything to do with me.
Personally I don’t think the town centre could carry anothet cafe. There is many options form cheap to Indians and everything inbetween. Also with pubs we have weather’s that caters for cheap pub food. So even if we had space, I’m not sure it would work. Any wastage would kill it dead.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the full name is available for that sort of price too. If it is, it’s probably worth getting and redirecting to the theglan.co.uk page. Just remember that the cost will go up after the first year or two.
March 26, 2019 at 5:17 am #32104Yes, it will go up to about a tenner I expect. I may get the full name too. I have no plans for it atm, but you never know.
Not quite as cheap, 7.99. But grabbed it anyhow. I wouldn’t use it as an email addy as I’d be forever spelling it out. It not the easiest word for an English person to say or forvthem to understand, nevermind spell.
I’ll no doubt put some type of landing page, and event info on it, not that anyone will ever visit it. Fb is where folk go now. As I don’t do do FB I’ll get my wife on that side of things.
