I thought that the Forumite old sweats may be interested in this account of US operations in Iraq.

Interesting and absorbing, Ed. I had read about and viewed much of what happened in Sadr City at the time, but recall no attention paid by the media to the concrete wall construction. N.I. was of course a much different affair, being part of the UK. However, I would have welcomed the construction of a similar wall around certain sections of Belfast and Derry, during my time there. I would have liked to have walled up certain people within it, too. Patrolling some areas in streets of those two cities was a real nail-biter. Our problem there was complicated by the fact that every male civilian was a potential enemy, and all male civilians looked just like every mainland UK citizen.

        I'm out.

Its an interesting inversion of the old castle siege tactic. Instead of the defenders building a wall to keep out the attackers and then being besieged into submission, the would be besieger’s build the wall themselves !

It could only work now with the advent of those quick to erect concrete T things.

Its actually even better because anyone inside the new castle can leave at any time, subject to search and security checks. If you dont leave then just maybe you are the people we are looking for ?

Corse it will most likely end in a hostage situation but at least they won’t be shooting people outside the wall anymore.

As the article said, this is not the first time such a tactic has been used. We used it in the Briggs Plan with barbed-wire and fencing during the Malayan Emergency to make safe havens for the population and force the insurgents out into the jungle away from their resupply bases. In contrast we played the role of insurgents in Borneo with our use of head-hunters and Special Forces, operating from reasonably secure bases in Sabah and Sarawak!
