Afternoon all – my mum rung me just now as her Sky was all messed up – from talking through it, turns out seems there was a firmware update pushed out, and even though she has an “old” (non-Q) Sky HD box she now has the SkyQ UI on her Sky HD box.
A bit of fiddling about and unplug/plug and we got it working, but it as a right pain as the startup screen tells her to point her touch remote (which she doesn’t have) at the box, the menus are very different for her (she is still sharp but is 84).
Any one else seen this – I know a lot of people are on “proper” Sky Q – but wonder if anyone now has the Sky Q interface on an old Sky HD box?

January 28, 2019 at 4:01 pm #30205No, had an update recently but the UI is the same.
January 28, 2019 at 6:12 pm #30212Thanks Dave – my first thought was they pushed a “Q” update at the wrong boxes but it does basically work….so guess it is deliberate and will be coming to other boxes soon…..probably looking to push legacy equipment users to Q……Mother is not impressed.
January 28, 2019 at 7:54 pm #30215No, I’m just counting the days until I get rid of Sky.

Haven’t regretted it for a second – and since I left they have bombarded me with offers to go back. Worst thing you can do with Sky is be a loyal paying customer. I’ve got my mums Skygo on the (non-gaming) Xbox as well as NowTV that I dip in and out of for the cricket…..and NowTV is the same as Sky regarding loyalty – if you sign up and keep paying you get nowt – I don’t and get regular offers for a cheap month of Sky Sport which I generally take up if it fits in with a Test series (although at the moment wishing I hadn’t bothered).
January 29, 2019 at 8:15 pm #30264Never regretted elbowing Sky either: I have been OK with Freesat but feeling there is a bit more to TV, so I might soon setup the NOW TV box that has sat in a cupboard since Currys gave it me as a freebie to sweeten the original deal.
Thanks for the tip, BL: –

That will be handy to know.

I'm out.January 29, 2019 at 8:48 pm #30268Bob, loads of good stuff on YouTube/Netflix/Amazon Prime. IIRC you have Netflix via a family member.
Amazon Prime video is very good but can be a pain to find exactly what you’re after.
January 30, 2019 at 4:30 pm #30283Thanks Nolan, I do use Netflix and I watch some YT, including Ed China’s stuff. I have no intention of using Prime yet. i also have lots of TV on my Tablet which I can connect to the TV.

I'm out.January 30, 2019 at 6:38 pm #30286Bob (unless it is the old white NowTV box) you can get netflix on nowtv box these days. If funds permit I’d get a Roku (the express was £19.99 in one of the amazon sales recently) – does the lot and without promoting a particular platform.
January 30, 2019 at 8:09 pm #30288If anyone is looking to buy a new TV, the Samsung smart remote is REALLY good at finding content. Just hold the mike button and say “”Forbidden Planet” and it offers you 4 or 5 ways to get the film (Amazon still want £12 for the HD version). The system uses Samsung and google servers to do the actual searching and voice recognition so its fast too. The only limitation is that the system only searches services that have apps installed on your Samsung TV. l only found that out a few weeks ago when I searched for something really obscure, that I had previously found on the internet, but couldnt find with the remote.
February 2, 2019 at 9:01 pm #30361My names Duke and I’ve Been clean of sky for probably 6 years. Though for my sins, I still sub to the Now TV enterainment package for £7pm an also the now tv sports mobile pakage, which is £5 pm for the premier league channel. I’ll pause that in May until the the season starts again.
So I’m not fully clean of sky yet. But £13pm sure beats the £116pm my pacagke was at peak sky addiction.
I will try harder before out next meeting.

That is what I found with many of these on demand outlets, my urge to watch gets overtaken before my search gets anywhere. I did see a few Amazon things about 15 months ago when I was stuck in the house but since then, nothing.
As for the SKY ‘drug’, the name of the pusher, Murdock was enough to keep me away from that addiction, his gang’s desire for all the money they could leach was too much for me.
February 3, 2019 at 12:54 pm #30376One thing that annoys me with Now TV is you get 4 devices, but if you stream from a phone to a Chromecast they count that as two – even though you are only watching one instance. Regarding Sky Go – the quality has improved a lot since I first used it – and is very watchable now on a 55″ TV via the Xbox App. If you know anyone with a Sky Sub who is not using one one of their included (two or four depending on sub) Sky Go slots then that is worth looking at (free or you can of course “come to an arrangement”). I believe it is 720p now rather than the earlier 480p. Works nicely on playstation (3+) and Xbox (360+) and with a media remote (rather than gamepad) is very user friendly.
