As it says, did my first Ryzen build today, very impressed. Ryzen 3 2200G, MSI B450M PRO-M2 , 8GB ram, WD Green 240GB M2, Thermaltake H17 case and Thermaltake Litepower 450 watt 80 plus PSU.

Tidy or what ? It’s silent too.

One glaring error on behalf of AMD and MSI. The HSF has a bulge at the top for the sole purpose of stating it’s AMD. The first ram slot is a couple of mm too close so the bulge just obscures the slot. You cannot rotate the HSF by 180 degrees as then the lead to the fan header is too short, but annoyingly not by much.

This thing is fast, in the time it took me to empty the dishwasher Windows 10 had installed itself to the interactive stage. Everything just zips along.

After Keefs problems with the  A320 board and 200GE I decided the £20 extra for the B450 was worth it. There is a complicated matrtix of chipsets and CPUs with regards pci-e, SATA, M2, NVMe and their associated interrupts that does your head in. An M2 should work with any CPU but NVMe requires a Ryzen, that much I worked out, but I can see why Keef is having issues.

The next build is going to be a 200GE but I’ll be sticking with the B450 boards as it’s for a start up who need a couple of budget office machine now but if all goes well we can drop in a Ryzen later. An M2 is super quick anyway so I’m not that worried about NVMe, same with the ram and the obscured slot, 8GB on a single stick will be fine.

I did look at Intel but AMD have the i3 and below market stitched up IMO. Probably the same with the i5 vs Ryzen 5 but I’ve no need to go there yet.

A up Dave, I thought you had crossed the river and started to speak Welsh when you said. Tidy or what.

I’m sure PM will correct me and that its: Theres tidy or what.

35 watts of goodness. Dave if you did not know you should be able to get hold of some msi O/C bios. See Guru 3D.

Thats if they have not gone already 1006 i think for the 2200GE build’s.

Yes, quite or what. Get a Decibel meter app for your phone. 30DB’s and less is classed as scilent. 🙂

Yes, they are fast. My i7 is showing its age. AMD build for me this coming XMas. I figure AMD will have intel on the run at every level this year with the new 7NM fab. 🙂

The favourable impact on my leccy bill is what I noticed on switching away from Intel/nVidia. That maybe an unfair comment as it also comprehends four years of progress, but at nearly 20p/unit electricity use is starting to be a major concern.

I’ve had a bit of luck. My RMA mobo is out of stock and so I am having the same mobo as you Dave. I have also downloaded the overcloking Bios. Thats if they still work uner the same name that is 1006 agesa.

I’ve got 2 x Athlon 200GE builds to do tomorrow, but with ASRock B450M-HDV mobos as I needed a TPM module (all the business builds I do now are W10 Pro with Bitlocker encryption).

The 2200G is only £50 more but would have bust the budget I had to work with. As they are only office machines that will be fine, from what I’ve seen the 200GE are comparable to the 6th Gen Pentium G which used to be my CPU for this sort of machine. An SSD makes the biggest difference and a 240GB is now only £35

If the start up takes off it’ll be easy to drop a Ryzen in at a later date if we need to. But for everyone here, spend the extra £50 now, you won’t regret it. Also avoid the A320 mobos, there are just too many compromises.

Well the build is complete. I used a top mount PSU case so you won’t be seeing any photos ? It’s as tidy as I could make it but not very pretty. With the lack of drives and graphics cards I could do with a PSU with just the ATX and 8 pin 12v cables without shelling out for a semi-modular PSU.

The Athlon 200GE is very impressive, doing all the software installation and setting up duties it’s extremely responsive. Indeed I can’t tell the difference between it and much more expensive CPUs. So for office duties it’s perfect and I suspect you’ll have to really push it to find the difference.

I still stand by the 2200G for people here but if you really need to save money, get the 200GE and a B450 rather than a 2200G and an A320.

For media centre type builds it’s as near silent as you can get, even with the small stock HSF. It looks small enough to fit in even the small media centre type cases. No problems with fouling the ram slots with this one.

The mobo is fine for my purposes but only has a single 1 x pci-e alongside the 16 x pci-e. If you need more the MSI B450M PRO-M2 I used on the Ryzen has two 1x slots.

I’m amazed at what a £50 CPU can do. Marvellous ?

EDIT – that’ll teach me. Last job, turn on Bitlocker only it won’t. I checked the BIOS to make sure it ‘d found the TPM module (with MSI you need to explicitly enable it) and it had, and enabled it. But I didn’t notice that AS-Rock’s defaults have CSM turn on so I had a non secure booting MBR hard drive. Just reinstalling everything on both PCs ?

Yeah, I figure that the 200GE has a bit more umph than a phenom 2 at the same speed.

As for the ram slots with on the B450 and the fan bulge on the cooler smacking the ram as it rotates, well thats as nuts as it gets. 🙂

I’ve got another 200GE to build. Back to the MSI mobo and H17 case, pretty much the same spec but they want a 480GB SSD.

                          I’ve also ordered 2 x HP 255 G7 Ryzen 3 8GB 256GB FullHD Laptops for a customer, not bad for £350

The benchmarks reckon it should be directly comparable to my Lenovo i5-6200u, we’ll see tomorrow.

A very nice laptop aimed at small business so lacking most of the crapware. It’s a better build than the domestic stuff but definitely not made to be worked on, just like Lenovo’s equivalents.

It really does motor on and the FullHD screen is very good. The keyboard / trackpad are just what you’d expect. A year ago you’d have been paying £500 for this sort of kit.

Personally I’d still buy the refurbished Elitebook G1 though.

Thanks for the recommendation. My X220 is running hot these days not really doing much and since I moved my office upstairs, I’m sitting on the sofa more with the wife in the evenings, so I’ve been on the lookout for a new laptop that’s a bit bigger, a bit cooler and means I can sit down there with her. Looks like it can do that – and I don’t have to go down the Apple route either which considering the price of them these days and the fact that almost everything I need now runs on Linux and Windows (with a minor exceptions) means I don’t have to go down that route.

I’ve been setting them up for the weekend. It’s hard to fault anything performance wise, for the money the build quality is above average.

Well looks like I’ll be ordering later.

I was debating on the HP one or the next one up cost wise on eBuyer is the Lenovo V330-14ARR. Benefit for the extra £50 appears to be the next step up CPU wise and it seems like it’ll support USB-C charging. Which would be handy as I have a USB-C charger and cable already that comes with me when travelling (an Anker multiport charger).

It’s got good reviews on eBuyer, but a number of awful ones as well, so I’m not sure.

I know someone that has the i5 version of the V330 and I set it up for him. Very nice laptop indeed, I cannot see what isn’t to like about it. The screen and trackpad are excellent, battery life no idea. That was 12 months ago, they may have changed components?

The HP I still have 2 of at home waiting to be deployed when I get back. They were a joy to set up and being aimed at business lack the HP bloatware. What was there was actually useful giving warranty information (and offering an extra 2 year onsite at £80ish) and OEM driver updates including the BIOS – very much like you get with the Lenovo.

Give me either and I’d be happy. If I was paying I’d probably go for the HP even though I’m a big Lenovo user.

USB C charging is brilliant for a laptop. My Chrome Book will charge from almost flat to full in about an hour using the supplied charger. OFC phones using that also charge damn quick.

It will charge from a quick charge USB C phone charger but much slower.

That’s my issue – I’ve got a Yoga 720 from work and it’s good and I’ve had the X220 which has been excellent. I’ve also got a Lenovo 120S lying around that I had before work bought me the Yoga to replace the god awful and huge PC Specialist laptop they’d initially given me. Therefore, I know the Lenovo should be fairly good.

I can’t find any other reviews online about the HP one! Google and DuckDuckGo draw blanks.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you can only get it from E-Buyer, you certainly can’t get it direct from HP. EB have a top of the pile partnership with HP.

I ended up ordering the Lenovo – will give it a chance and if needed, I can exchange it for the HP one I guess. I saw that generally the 2500U appears to beat the 2200U in benchmarks in both single and multi core and I’ve been happy with Lenovo products now for a while (couldn’t really complain about the HP Stream 11 I had previously either though).
