My nephews mobo went bang last week he replaced it like for like but now it just keeps restarting. Had a few messages in bsod ( whea something or other) I’ve  had him unplug everything and add a component at a time. Everything added bar gpu been running for about a hour so me thinks gpu knackered don’t want him to add it case it causes damage. What you guys think?  Thanks

Did nephew reload the OS or just transfer the HDD to the new mobo?

Is he sure the new mobo is identical and not a different version of the same model?

He said like for like  maybe a different  version ? Updated bios? It runs for couple mins and then restarting.. I’m bit scared to advise him to put gpu back in. Try and Help him over the holidays

Windows 10 is very robust about drivers these days. I’ve accidentally put the wrong hard drive into a different machine and it sorts itself out. Also swapping ATi to Nvidia cards without uninstalling software.

If it runs fine on the integrated graphics then fails with the GPU in I would tend towards hardware issues.

12 to 15 years ago  we had some PC cases c/w PSU’s which turned out to be CARP (Thanks CPC) as the PSU would fail with uncontrolled voltage on all rails. Once I fully recognised the problem, I advised all owners to have a new PSU. (Difficult conversation, but the boss would not consider FOC replacements), though I did not charge for labour. If not replaced, failure usually killed off most or all of the boards plus the HDD.

Is it possible you have a PSU fault? There is one 12v supply frequently required for the graphics card, which may not be used elsewhere. Before fitting any GPU, I would check all supply rails whilst running.

                    Les.

Easy test, of course, is a test GPU (even if borrowed). Should either confirm or rule it out.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
