“Black Friday Week” appears to be ramping up this year.
Are there any genuine bargains out there? Or are they just standard prices with a lot of marketing?

November 20, 2018 at 7:30 am #28420If you were after an Echo Dot, the prices were 50% off, so they went quick.

November 20, 2018 at 7:52 am #28421I think you have to be both quick and lucky to get a bargain. I just obtained VMWare at 45% off but the offer only lasted hours!
November 20, 2018 at 8:37 am #28423If you are selective, need something and know the ‘normal prices’ then you are best placed to find if a bargain exists, but nothing is certain. If you are lucky you can pick a winner, but do not be fooled by the hype into buying over priced or unnecessary ‘bargains’. I did get a replacement for a failed item at about 30% less than the usual market rate yesterday. I considered it worth a snap buy action.
November 20, 2018 at 9:59 am #28424It’s only a bargain if you want the item. The new gen 3 dot looks a massive upgrade to the gen 2 dot. They was £25 last Friday. (amazon started early).
Not only is the sound much better, you can now sterio them like Google minis. Given the dot has a aux in, a pair could make a good pc set up.maybe.

November 20, 2018 at 4:47 pm #28431Just got this from the Oberon Gallery in Leicester – bargain. Am a fan of Dale Bowen and his paintings. £500 down to £356!
His VW Camper vans and their intergallactic settings, piloted by silly looking sheep really tickle me. Hence “Space Sheep Enterprise” as the title.

November 23, 2018 at 2:01 pm #28473Undoubtedly there are bargains to be had, but my take on it after browsing the ‘deals’ is that it’s all a glorified marketing exercise, with the big figure, headline grabbing deals supported ( if not over-compensated ) by multiple purchases of minimum discounted items – or in fact, price increases.
I’ve had my eyes on THESE for the last week for our now finished en suite. I went ahead and ordered them, then discovered the wife wanted to wait for a Black Friday deal, so I cancelled them within 5 minutes. Well, come Black Friday I checked them out and the double is still £39.99 but the single is now £24.99, up from £19.99!!
My monitor stand I got for £23.99, a NEWER version ( only marginally different ) is showing on the deal as down from £34.99 to £26.39!!!
It’s all very reminiscent of Dixons’ year round sales of years gone by!!
November 23, 2018 at 3:04 pm #28474Picked up a 128GB micro-SD card (Sandisk) for £14.99 on Amazon – was waiting for sub-£20 so happy days.
Best deal I’ve seen (and I don’t need them) is 3x TP-Link Smart Plugs for £36.99. You have to add 3 to the basket for the discount to apply (£29.99 each otherwise). Link.
I’m after a decent spec Android 8″ tablet if anyone spots a bargain
November 23, 2018 at 5:01 pm #28476Had an email from Broadbandbuyer, 10% off Synology and QNAP with Iron Wolf HDDs. Bugger just bought and DS218j and 2 x 1TB . Should have know, the deal is only for the DS218+ and 4TB drives.
The DS218+ is a damn fine NAS but literally twice the price.
November 23, 2018 at 9:39 pm #28477I had a browse through the Amazon BF deals. Honestly, nada worth getting. All low end carp.
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
November 23, 2018 at 10:00 pm #28480I see the nVidia Shield TV has been reduced. I’ve been tempted. I’ll perhaps check John Lewis tomorrow when I’m there (as whilst it’s out of stock online, they might have it in store for that price but I’m not holding my breath). If I can get one this week for cheap, I’ll replace the Apple TV, as that has never really taken off for what I wanted it for (some casual gaming on the TV) as there hasn’t been many games released for it.
