Mrs T74 and I took the lads to the Wigan memorial this morning biggest turnout ever. It was brilliant to see so many people in attendance it seems to get bigger every year. When we got home a lot of friends re-posted a video on facebook which I found really touching. I’m not sure if it is an old one but it is the first time I have seen it See here this guy must have been one of the earliest parachute regiment members or not far off. Maybe he even new my grandad back in the day.
Cheers Mark

November 12, 2018 at 12:09 pm #28163Yes happy Birthday Mark!
I am an ex-soldier with 12 years of service, in several areas of the world. But I don’t do Remembrance and I don’t do Reunions, or the Legion. All of these are great and wonderful activities and organisations, but I have several reasons for shunning them. I don’t like “collective” meetings, don’t like to hear the Last Post: it brings back too many powerful, upsetting emotions about mates I have lost and people I have seen killed and maimed. One mate was hit in the head by a device in Belfast and I was at his side. He spent his last years in a Cheshire Home, drooling into his shirt and completely incontinent. I don’t do reunions because there are too many ex-squaddies telling tall tales and exaggerating or lying about their service. The Legion is a fine organisation which helps many people, but the only two halls that I ever went to, had a good ration of liars.
I hope this does not upset anyone here: these are my true feelings. I have my own private memorial, whenever I see a War Memorial, outside of Remembrance Sunday, I take off my hat, bow my head, stand quietly and remember.

I'm out.November 12, 2018 at 4:05 pm #28173marine for 4 years, I’m don’t do it, when I was a kid I loved watching the main service on TV, but since I’ve left I’ve left I’ve not been a service. You have to attend when in service.
Watch a shed load of minutes silence this weekend with the footy.
I don’t mind the minutes silence, what I don’t like is the ‘last post’ being played on a bugle. Its a super emotional for me. I’m not an emotional person. But that brings back a few bad memories.
That’s just my personal view, but I find it strange to ‘remember’ or ‘celebrate’ the life of the men, by reminding the people who knew some them men with the tune you last heard as you was dropping them in a hole.
I can remember all year, all the good things we done. I don’t care for the bad things. It’s abit like valarines day, if you need a special day to show the love for your wife, you don’t have the right wife.

November 12, 2018 at 8:56 pm #28183Mark, you’re in Wigan. 10 minutes away from Warrington if the Virgin train turns up on time.
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
November 12, 2018 at 10:03 pm #28189Yes Dan just down the road. This weekend I was saying to the misses we haven’t been to Warrington for ages apart from regular visits to Ikea There used to be a jacket potato seller outside the shopping centre I used to love going there. Regarding the service the main reason we go is because we have family named on the Wigan memorial. My dad did 24 yrs in the paras and some of the stories he told me mimic what Steve said about burying friends even sand bags in some cases quite scary stuff.

I’ve never stopped in Warrington, always passing through it on the way to Liverpool for work.
Did I see a thread about a northern meet up recently?

Thanks for the link! I was going to go to the cinema to see this, so this has saved me some money!
Mark, I would have been at that parade where the video was taken, as I was marching at the head of the Air Cadet section of the parade. I’m afraid I can’t confirm if it’s true as we finished the parade and then headed around the corner for some photos with the parents. The parade was a bit of a SNAFU actually taking part in it, not sure what it was like for someone not in it (i.e. we formed up and marched off late, the civic dignitaries were late and I’m sure the two minutes silence lasted longer than two minutes (or at least the gun shots were not timed correctly!) Either way, that shouldn’t detract from the reason that we were there.

November 13, 2018 at 10:53 pm #28253Hi Drezha
It appeared on the MEN website later on that it was the Manchester parade.
Yes there was talk of a northern meet up
Cheers Mark
