Hello – neighbour’s son asked for some help with his ipad 2. I suspect the wifi chip is on the way out, but having never owned or used (in anger) and apple pad or phone, thought I’d see if there’s anything else to try. story so far:

      – ipad worked fine until a couple of days ago, when suddenlt it will only connect when he is right next to their router.
      – tried resetting the router – no change
      – tried changing router channel – no change
      – tried resetting (factory reset) the ipad – no change
      – tried the ipad on my router, same symptoms, although it does work up to about 2 yards away (theirs is only about a foot)
      – their router is virgin hub, mine is bt hub 5

Since the problem seems to follow the ipad, my hunch is that the wifi chip is on the way out, but as I say open to any more suggestions before final diagnosos. I also understand that the Apple Store won’t even look at it without charging (even if they don’t fix) – is that right?

My instinct would be to ebay it, detailing the probelm, and put whatever he gets towards something else. There’s many posts on the web regarding wifi hardware issues, which doesn’t do much for my optimism!

Any suggestions to try or alternative repair options before I suggest getting rid.

      Ta

i dont know how hard it is to get into an ipad2 , but a quick ebay give wifi modules for £3 ish, if be tempted to see it i can open it, then order the part.

well id visit ifixit first to see if its possible for layman’s to do. an ipad 2 wont be worth much now, its a dinosaur.

Yeah the apple store is expensive,

i would echo once its on its way send it along the bay and flip the money into maybe even another Ipad mini2, they are still on sale and not outrageously priced.  If apple still have a student discount programme might be worth looking into as anything bought through the student discount programme has a much reduced long term repair and protect warrante.

I had the origanal Nexus 7, it aged fast.  Not an apple fan, but the iPad 2 just won’t die, and it functions well enough.

I’ve tried to like tablet s but they have never stuck with me. So the most amazing part of our iPad 2 story is that it was bought me from an us air force base,at a reduced cost, I never liked it, so my them 2 year old girl took custody of it, and had used it almost daily since. She cracked it about a year ago, bit it’s still fine and holds 7 hours battery. She is now 8.

It is like her comfort balnket. I had a scrappy teadybear! Oh times change.

For personal use the Ipad 2 and Iphone 4 and 5 ive had have been tough as nails, a popular pub trck back at university was for me to throw my iphone over my shoulder and challenge any of my plastic android brethren to do the same with two doing it and suffering the broken phone consequences.  The ipad is my tool of choice now for all but the heavy typing, and it has never let me down so far.

I loved the nexus but as you say it aged FAST they changed the graphic chip after the first year so the first gen got limited support and now isnt supported by much in the way of alternative OSs Cyanogen seems to have breathed a still slightly asthmatic bit of life into it but it has little purpose with the Mini doing everything harder and faster and linked to my phone and MB.
