Didn’t know which Forum to put this in, there isn’t one for employment/jobs or similar, so I put it in Other Tech talk.?
There’s a project in the wind for child protection whereby all the relevant agencies achieve IT inter-connectivity and transparency. Basically for them all to co-ordinate with each other timely and effectively. Obviously it’s Government run.
My son was in the running for a job as a Project Manager/Scrum Master. He’s no longer in the running, despite howls of disbelief from the Agency and first level client, because he worked for ( in actual fact to, because he was Agency staff, ) the BBC. Apparently if you’ve worked for or associated with, the BBC, the Government doesn’t like you!!
This is hugely ironic because when he started work with the BBC, to bring a project that was overspent, over-staffed and way, way behind, back on target, he was taken to one side and told not to rock too many boats, because if a BBC employee was disciplined/sacked or whatever, there could be a complete walk-out. This frustrated the hell out of him, as did some of the staff whose idea of doing something meant going away for 4 or 5 days to take a home study course and come back to execute the function. He was so frustrated throughout his time there, he was glad to be gone.
It’s amazing that has come back to haunt him in this fashion.
October 11, 2018 at 6:44 pm #27063Sad to say I’m not surprised.
He would probably have done a good job, can’t have that. No reason for budget overspend and lining pockets.
October 11, 2018 at 6:44 pm #27064Your insight into the ways of the BBC world might just be why others are afraid to risk contact with an ex-associate?
I cannot remember why but I read the second part of your write up with a depressing acceptance of what you said and a total lack of surprise. I just cannot now think why it all felt so normal for them. I have never been with the BBC so no association there.
I am sorry for your son’s missed chance and trust there will be other openings.
October 11, 2018 at 7:34 pm #27066Oh the BBC again.
What do they actually do these days and why do they think I should pay for it ? Apart from their own special version of world news, what programs do they make ? Almost eveything is made for them by production companys now.
October 12, 2018 at 9:38 am #27088If he can prove this allegation, he should write to John Sweeney!
October 12, 2018 at 11:47 am #27093You are joking arnt you Ed ?
With an education at the LSE and a career at the BBC Sweeny must be up for a civil servant of the year award by now surely ?
October 12, 2018 at 12:47 pm #27094No – Sweeney is first and foremost a journalist, who is not afraid to go where others fear to tread.
Quite frankly IF Government agencies are blocking appointments based SOLELY on the individual previously working for the Beeb then it needs to be exposed.
Tbh, I would find such action difficult to believe. There are many reasons that someone would fail to make a selection shortlist, and when a large list has to be culled, quite a few of these are fairly irrational e.g. doubts that someone is a ‘team-player’. However prior employment (unless unsatisfactory or irrelevant) is never in my experience one of them.
