Going up to the big smoke today.
Next-Generation NAS – DSM Evolved: New product line, boosted performance, enterprise storage and backup service.
Private Cloud, Collaboration, Networking & Surveillance: New technologies in Moments, Synology Drive, Mesh Router and Surveillance Station 8.2
I’ll let you know any highlights. One thing I am looking forward to is Turn phones into cameras with LiveCam: Your mobile device can now be an IP camera. Once LiveCam is installed on your mobile phone, you can add it to Surveillance Station as an IP camera that can record as you go. Put your spare devices to good use.
Parkway Station is closed as they’re finishing off the electrification work, so a bus ride to another station then a wide diversion. Won’t be home until gone 9 ?
October 3, 2018 at 8:25 pm #26709There was a ton of stuff, they are certainly going places. I’ll wait for the slides to come through, but everything has got more intelligent. Facial recognition on the photo album, advanced analytics in the surveillance software i.e. recognition of a human’s / animals / cars shape to include / exclude as an event trigger. The example was catching cyclists on a busy pavement. People walking won’t trigger the camera.
There will be a mesh router and units available soon. The parental / employer controls for their WiFi kit are the best I’ve seen.
There will be a free VMWare backup module. More Active Directory integration. Central management of thousands of remote boxes. More collaboration software.
For the prize draw WD gave away a couple of 8TB Reds and a 10TB Red Pro. So Seagate went one better with 14TB Ironwolf drives. Needless to say I didn’t win anything ?
October 3, 2018 at 9:02 pm #26711The golden rule of give-aways as far as I was concerned was that I would only ever win something if there was no way I would ever be able to use the thing. So it always turned out I only every won, e.g. cinema tickets for place to which access from home was just about impossible.
Glad your main event was something to fire your interest, though I suspect it would be of interest while you wore your ‘trade’ rather than your home hat.
I have set my portable to try the latest windows 10 1809 update, the initial phase of the update took a while, but the restart part is not going anywhere too obvious, since I restarted the thing about 15 minutes ago. There is no progress bar or anything like that, though the SSD appears to be involved in something ‘vital’. It is starting to feel like a walk away and do something more interesting event.
October 4, 2018 at 5:57 am #26729I ended up leaving it all night, and by morning the feature update had failed to install with no reason. I will try it again this morning.
October 4, 2018 at 10:02 am #26733Finally got there, after a few machine specific issues I suspect. There are the usual program associations to sort out, but it did finally arrive in fairly short order. The MS desire to coral users to use (suffer?) only MS chosen programs is a bit of a pain, but it has drawn adverse comment elsewhere before.

Yes, the general desire to ram Bing and Edge down your throat – or to presume that you want them without first asking – is a true pain.
As are the additional dross on the start menu!! Connect, Game Bar, Groove, Mail, Messaging, Mobile Plans, Mixed Reality, People, Snip and Sketch, Xbox plus all the game demos.
What really irritates me is that I use Winaero’s Windows 7 games for Windows 10. I hate the app versions – they just don’t feel right, never mind MS pushing for extras. Practically every time there is an update I lose these programmes and I lose the shortcuts from the taskbar. It’s no great shakes to set everything back to as before – I’ve kept the exe in the download folder, but it feels like MS are being petty because it isn’t their version.
