Looking at a potential upgrade from the Moto G5.
Have done a quick look around and the P20 and Honor 10 seem to be about the reasonable price point. They seem identical other than the camera and I’m not sure a camera can be £200 more!
Any idea or recommendations?

September 20, 2018 at 1:39 am #26117If you’re on Twitter, it might be worth asking @PaulOBrien from Modaco. He’s tested them both recently 🙂
September 20, 2018 at 7:13 am #26119The wife has the P20, and tbh the camera isn’t all that on it. It’s not bad, but I don’t think it’s that special either, next to the P20p. I’ve not tested the honour 10, and don’t even know which is the more expensive one, I’m guessing the honour is the cheaper though.
There must be a hat full do P20 v h10 review out there. If there is 200 difference, and it’s mainly down to the camera, I’d go for the h10 unless you really want the best camera. If that’s so, the P20p is special, (it really is), but I have no idea the price difference over the P20.
The P20 I’d say is the perfect size phone, it just feels right, the P20pro took some getting use to after using the pixel (5″) for 12 months prior. That too has a brilliant camera. Mine is going back to google today to get new battery. It’s still under Warrenty just, so I decided to get it fixed before that expired.
September 20, 2018 at 7:26 am #26120One more thing, if you take selfies, (I don’t personally) the P20p is the worst phone I’ve had the (dis) pleasure of using. It’s ‘beauty’ mode can’t be fully turned off, and I doubt the P20 is any differnt.
Full is, full on plastic face, and off is the sky sports 1 inch of foundation look. It’s just wrong. I always thought it would be fixed with a patch, given I got it day one, but may patches have been and gone, and the front camera is still poor at making you look normal.
I don’t understand why they but such a big sensor in it, then basically blar it’s shot. May as well have a 2pmx module in it.
September 20, 2018 at 1:41 pm #26132The Honor is the cheaper phone -£400 from Carphone Warehouse. The P20 is £479. The P20 Pro is £679. If you’re throwing that sort of price around as well, then the Oneplus 6 comes in to the ring as well.
The Pro is a bit out of what I was looking for. And looking at the GSM Arena photo comparison area, the Honor appears to have a better image than the P20 and in the tests, I think that some of the images are better than the P20 Pro ?. I know that’s a controlled environment but still, I would have thought that the Pro would be head and shoulders better. Maybe I’ll have another proper look this evening.

September 20, 2018 at 4:39 pm #26141Must be just a one off, as the pro is very good. But I think we get a bit carried away, given any upper lowered phone had a very good camera, and mid range is excellent. If we need better, the fine gains of adding $300 to 400 would be better spent on a dslr like a nikon 3300.
Here is a couple of photos from Tuesday night. The one at the bar worked well, it was quite dark, behind the stand. the ones in the stand I added to show zoom vs no zoom. And I added a shot of my Ugly mug to show how poor the front camera is.
But if the H10 is getting close to the p20pro go for it. You can always return it if you don’t like it.

You’re right Steve – that picture is definitely sub-par………….. quality isn’t too bad though!!????
September 20, 2018 at 5:44 pm #26150What is it with ‘trends’ for crap images? I suspect that the front facing camera shots have been enhanced with what are thought to be a more mild version of on trend ‘enhancements’. I keep getting sent junk via Google showing ‘enhanced crap of some of the dog pictures I have taken. They are NOT improvements.
September 21, 2018 at 4:29 am #26176Chris have you looked at the popophone F1, 300£ and had all the whistles. I’ve not looked in to how you get one. Bit worth a look for you if you haven’t.
If you get one and don’t like it I’ll swap you my original pixel 5′ 128gb Fresh back from Google with a new battery. Always lived in a case and a screen protector.
I’m Sauong this having no idea how much my Pixel is with lol. If it’s a good deal for you, I’d be in.
My Pixel is only with 200 on ebay so scrap trh deal, amazon has the poco ojoen for 265 for the 64gb version. The bigger version has more ram, so you may want to upgrade because of that, but otherwise I’d say 64gb is more than enough space. My 6p was 64gb and I never got near it. My last two have been 128gb,and cos it’s so big I’ve broke 64gb a few times, but thst being lazy in the how work department, leaving 10s of movies on it and a fee full seasons of tv.
Atm I have 81gb free, that’s with 20 movies on show box, 1 on Netflix, and 19 episodes but a few albums in hi def, and half a gig of music.
So no one needs 128gb yet. Unless you want to do alot of 4k recording or the high friamrate stuff which eats memeroy. You really need a 256gb then, even bigger tbh.
September 23, 2018 at 7:30 pm #26306Mum has ordered a Pocophone F1, from Laptops Direct. Should arrive tomorrow.
Not the cheapest option but I trust them and it’s not on a slow boat from China.
OFC I’ll be there at some point tomorrow to check it out and set it up. I’ll report back then.
September 23, 2018 at 9:30 pm #26311I was thinking the other day about recommending this phone. I’d like a full review please.
About the only down side, I don’t think it would bother me, is Netflix and iplayer (and a couple of others) are stuck in SD, youtube goes up to 1080p 60fps
Its not a software thing, it’s a licencing thing in the actual encoding, I think it’s hardware locked, so it is what it is. But at 299, for what you’re getting and sd in a 6inch phone looks fine. When I was away I war he’d alot of stuff in sd and lower to save on data, and wasn’t bothered. So I’d happily use one as my main device.
We seem to be back where 1plus was 4 years ago. Top end specs at bargain bucket prices. Also I’m a fan of xiaomi (who I think makes the poco) , I actually use there shart kit stuff which is brilliant and cheap, with one down side, lol, it has voice usage like a Google home, that acts as the hub the all the smart iot crap connects via that. Its stuck in Chinese. So I personally can’t use the Google home side of the device. But do have a Google home next to it, so both America and China are listening in on me lol. Hedge my bets.
But I would like a rundown on how you find it. My knob of son just dropped the price of a decent run about on the iPhone maxi phone. Looks identical to the one he got 12 months ago just a bit bigger. Idiot!
I just don’t understand where or who is has got this habit of waiting cash on stupid tech from ?
September 24, 2018 at 3:42 pm #26346I splashed out for the P20 Pro from Amazon and I’ve been using it today.
It’ll be going back tomorrow I’m pretty sure. The battery optimisation on it is stupidly aggressive – to the extent that my smart watch loses connection more often than not – I can’t get notifications which is the entire reason I wear a smart watch (my phone remains on silent at all times and the watch alerts me). It also cuts out all my music programs when the screen locks off – Pocket Casts? Nope. Doubletwist? No chance. I have manually disabled battery optimisation for these programs, but I’ll have to do this for all new apps. I was listening to Headspace earlier and it cut that out.
The camera? I’ve done a couple of shots and so far it hasn’t seemed like it’s worth the £670. The colours seem a bit bright (the AI said I was shooting a sky) and it seems a bit bright. With some playing, I may well get on with it, but at the minute, £670 for a phone that is giving me issues on day one isn’t a good sign.
I’ll go back to my Moto G6 Plus. At least that works as I expect it to, even if the camera isn’t the greatest! Does the job at the minute I guess, and most of the time I’m also carrying an iPhone 7 (work phone) if I want to snap something better than the G6. Or I guess I should dig out my digital camera. Or try the Pocophone!

September 24, 2018 at 3:55 pm #26350I just turned the optimisation off, and I still can’t get the flings to die, so just turn it off. I use a fossil (Explorer iirc) smart watch, which gets all notifications, and can text and call ect. But like you I just use use it for notifications tbh.
My first issue with a real smart watch was tuning what notifications I didn’t want coming to my wrist.
The photo AI, can’t be turned off to, I don’t really get what it does other than boost the colours, which is somthing I hate full stop. And a reason why I don’t use Samsung devices. As you couldn’t (you may now) fully turn down the ‘popping’ screen colours. They seem to see it as a selling point. I’d alway and I did with the P20p, first stop, turn it to naterwl tones. Though Samsungs naterwl mosedcwas sill alway too aggressive. Admitidly when you have it dialled up to vivid (or whatever the name) it makes it look nicer than the screen next to it, when on a shelf, or Sat on a table, but I’d rather have realism than vivid.
So yea turn it off, also the AI data set is too small, it only rconises a few things.or rather bundles everything in to a hand full of categories.
Saying all that, I do love the camera, (not the front 24mpx one) the rear one, it’s night shooting is top draw, and I came from a pixel that had amazing low light shooting. I don’t think it could be improved so much. And it’s that that stopped me going back to my now favoured 5” sized phone..
September 24, 2018 at 4:57 pm #26355Turned the optimisations off, so we’ll see how we go and also turned off the AI.
Will have to perhaps have a longer play – at least my Amazon refund can be done until October 24th.
We’ll see how it goes, as the Huawei Ascend P1 was probably one of my favourite phones and had a cracking camera (in my eyes).
