Goodbye TalkTalk, hello SSE. SSE offered me fibre & anytime calls for £7 less a month than TT with only  evenings & weekends free calls. TT gradually removed things like free local calls & changed the times when free calls could be made. I even reported them for sales calls even though we are registered with the Telephone Preference Service.

Although I’ve had fairly good service from TT the prices kept steadily rising. SSE has guaranteed no rises for three years & no contract.

The changeover was hassle free – well if you don’t count being cut off at 1am. Still debating whether to use the supplied Technicolor TG589 VDSL router, stick with the old Open Reach modem = Trendnet router or buy a new VDSL router.

Might just be coincidence but both Pale Moon & Internet Explorer seems less sluggish.

What is there download limits like. That’s what keeps me at TT. Not that I have any ill feeling towards them.

We don’t have a phone plugged into ours, nor do we use their tv, we just use it as a dumb pipe. And bandwidth, and (lack of) restrictions is top of my list.

However, how is their router and speeds of up and downloads.

Im with SSE for my power. Getting them to fit a smart meter next week.

I don’t know of any contract that has download limits these days.

I know bt and vergin ‘shape’ your traffic under fair use. Iirc it’s about 200gb, which would just about cover a week my house.

So that is a no. Cell we don’t have cable this side of Chester so vergin is out anyhow

xDSL routers were discussed on another thread recently. I tried two (Homehub 5 and Asus RT-AC68U and had problems with both), but there are reliable one-box solutions now – I know Dave is happy with Drayteks and I think the TP-Links and Netgears have good reviews.

The advantage of the OR modem is that you can stick any router behind it and tinker as much as you like without resetting the line. Saying all of that if/when I change next I’ll be looking at a one box xDSL solution, ideally Asus if they sort their act out.

I think I’d really miss a fully configurable third party router now.

I’m waiting till they start rolling out the SMETS2 meters – should be late this year or early next year. The SMETS1’s  were a bit temperamental – interesting article HERE on the overall  project and implications for the Government’s targets.

I will never have a smart meter. My meter goes backwards on very sunny days ? I’ve already done as much energy saving as is practical, it won’t tell me much I don’t know. If it could get my daughter to turn the lights out after she’s left though…

The problem with the BT whitebox is that they are now obsolete so if you rely on one and it breaks you’re out of luck. However the Draytek 130 does the same job and like the white box you just plug it in and your router does all the authentication.

As for the Technicolor, they don’t have the best reputation but I also believe in if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If it’s a better spec than the Trend Net (probably the AC WiFi) then you lose nothing by trying it.

As for replacing it, the TG589 can be set in bridge mode i.e. like the BT white box or D130, which opens up Ethernet only routers. Probably only for specialist stuff, like Synology routers, as modern VDSL routers are just as capable for home use.

The John Lewis broadband ones do when I was in there the other day.

A major deviation, but Dave’s references to a ‘smart Electricity Meter’ reminded me of ‘Smart Thermostats’ such as that from Nest (there are others). These are normally paired with the phones of the householders and switch the thermostat to an ‘away’ setting when everyone is out. This works and does save money if your house is frequently left empty (roughly a five year payout in my case). There are very real and much larger savings for working households, and smaller but real savings when everyone just goes out for the day.

Of course equal savings could be made by manually setting the thermostat, but that soon gets easy to forget. The stats may also be a bit smarter than the average human in that they monitor outside temperatures and adjust the heating accordingly.

My IT genius gson made his own “Nest-type” solution and keyed it to various devices, recording usage to an old tablet that he rooted, upgraded and reset solely for that task. He looks at weather towards the end of the working day and uses either his phone or the work system connected to his PC, to set heating. He can also set TV to record, start dishwasher, set Microwave to thaw or oven to start cooking what he may have left in there. All from his own setup. He has designed 3 remote systems for contracts and boss admits he struggles to understand them. He sets up Server systems on a white board, translates them into reality. Amazing lad, getting more amazing all the time.

I created this situation by building his first PC when he was 9 or so: trying to find that “one thing/one direction” that Aspergers intelligence can react to and go with. Created a monster!

I’ve recently refused a smart meter for my electricity. Having gotten a £1,300 refund, I quite like the idea of this savings plan. Requires no effort whatsoever.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
