I am well aware that one route into the spine is via the neck Bob. My latest spinal op went in that way to sort out the issues with my cervical spine. I wondered why I had a double height vertebra, only to find out I did not, I had two self fused together. The one at the top on which my skull sits is at a jaunty angle which does not inspire confidence in any spinal person. They had to move my throat out of the way to try to sort things out so for a long time swallowing was a challenge and I still eat and swallow more slowly years after the event. The main issue is that looking up and even more so trying to do anything above shoulder height is now a serious challenge. So I set out to investigate why the travel stops for the garage opener were not working. One end appeared to improve after some otherwise ineffective fiddling. The other end required more dramatic dismantling. Then all was laid bare, Clearly the limit switch was intended to open when the end of travel was reached, but both wires were completely stripped of all insulation and had short circuited with both each other and the frame so the circuit was never opened and travel resulted in impact with the emergency stop. Brought to the work bench, AKA the kitchen table it only took moments to clear the issue with some connectors but the study had been one charged to pain and frustration as even climbing onto a two step hop up is no longer an activity for the faint hearted.
In contrast levelling up the rain water collection but was far easier as it working at ground level and employing a few levers to move the now well filled item.
Anyone else gain a sense of achievement from doing over due jobs?
August 27, 2018 at 10:02 am #25239Well I have being trying to have a good day out in filey for the past 5 years. Finaly made it there yesterday. Well, actually went to Skirlington market first but then had my fair share of pints in the afternoon. Walked about 12 mile in total which I am not use to and paing for it today.

August 27, 2018 at 3:46 pm #25246No diy, been super lazy since I got home from my hols. Did by an new atifty as the old one got dropped just before we went away by me! Enjoying as I never drop shit, and the thing I do is worth a fortune, and used often.
The biggest achievement of the weekend was going the Brighton game, and us winning, while city dropped points.
Ive been thst lazy I’ve not even caught up with the F1 I missed while I was away, so couldn’t watch yesterday’s race and now have to avoid the results untill I catch up.
No diy or illness related issued this weekend. Oh except my son who is a trainee pharmacist, was run over on Thursday going to work, (hit and run). Knkwked him unconscious, so he was kept in ozzy for scans xrays, just a bit of head brushing and some scrapes, nothing broken. He was release Saturday morning (lucky as my footy trip was almost cancelled). But he is fuming as he missed all the bank holiday weekend Sat I’m bed, being looked after by a 10 year old girl. He is really board now, and has been told he shouldn’t go work for 7 days. He is gutted he informed boots of this, as he wants to go back work. Bright side, if he is bored come mid week, I have some diy crap Ive been putting off lol. Jokes aside he was quite lucky.
The lad is 24, from the way his mother acted you’d of thought he was ten. I also got in trouble as she was at her friends in Liverpool, I was picking her up Thursday afternoon, so thrusday morning when I ended up being called from the hospital, and ford out it was not life of death, I decided to not inform the wife.
my thinking was why ruin her short trip, Especally as im collecting her 10 hours later. Aparantly that wasn’t the right call! I must of forgot her years of (non)medical training! It not like informing her asap would of changed the outcomes, and only given her stress.
So I got shouted at, as did he for being ran over, an he did again for ringing me and not her. So he got it twice. Lol.
August 27, 2018 at 5:43 pm #25247Your lad was lucky Steve, could have been a lot worse.
I’ve been hit by cars 3 times, one on foot, once on a skateboard and once on a bike. None my fault and walked away from all of them. The one on foot I was taken to hospital for a check over, the others I didn’t touch my head so figured if something was wrong I’d find out later. ?
I put my walking away from them all to knowing how to fall, it’s ingrained in me since about age 9-13 when I did some karate, judo and jiu jitsu.
August 27, 2018 at 5:47 pm #25248Not for the first time I can understand all view points. Frankly if your son was KO’d by the accident it not only had the potential to be serious, frankly it was serious and I hope that he is making the recovery you all hope for. Being a hero when there is something to gain is one thing, trying to be a hero when that does not apply is a high risk strategy. I can understand his Mum’s reaction, after years of experience I always remember a colleagues wise words, always dirty their hands and let the other party decide. I will generally pay back a better dividend than keeping silent, which never works out well. I trust that it will continue to turn out well. That was a less good weekend after all.
August 27, 2018 at 6:31 pm #25253I have posted before about my own hit & run experience in Germany. Staggering up a hill with a sharp bend halfway up to the camp and our airfield, completely off my face after yet another argument with my first missus. Around the corner came a stolen VW with a Porsche engine specially fitted. Hit me, I sailed into the air and came down across a broad wall. The initial impact broke both legs, hitting the wall broke some ribs, jerking forward over the wall smashed my (then) good looks into the other side. Smashed nose, fractured skull which still has a deep ridge across the LH side. In a coma for 3 days, 3 separate brain ops over the year, by a famous German brain surgeon. If a German had not been looking out of his window at 3:30 am, and called a German ambulance instead of the camp, I would never have made it alive to BMH Rinteln, about 32 KM away. As it was, the surgeon was touring German hospitals and advising surgical teams at each one. He would not allow the RAMC to take me away.
I do not remember a single moment of that night. But I do know that I was both very unlucky and very fortunate, first to be in that thieving driver’s path, and second as a result of the incredible coincidences that saved my life. The only later consequences, were a nose op to remove a tiny piece of bone that gave me ferocious headaches, and the ridge of the scar across my head, becoming more noticeable now my hair is disappearing. Which is why I wear a hat, usually a baseball cap.
Steve, your lad shares the same bad luck in being hit by a barmpot TWOC idiot, but also the good luck which means it was not as serious as it could have been. I remember being young at the time this happened, and once I believed I was ready, I wanted out and back to work. You cannot fight that attitude, it’s a part of feeling young and invincible. God luck to your lad, same age as my eldest grandson at 24.

I'm out.August 29, 2018 at 7:11 pm #25312I can honestly say, sod all. Well, I had an alcohol-free day (not to be confused with a free alcohol day) on Monday. But other than that, I achieved precisely nothing.
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
August 29, 2018 at 8:08 pm #25315I signed up for a free Edx course. The course is called C++ foundation and the first three lessons have been simple as I already come from a C background but we are getting into C++ classes now and the video’s have taught me a few tricks about using Visual Studio. The course is run by Microsoft and a certificate of competence is avalible upon completion if you pay £77.
August 30, 2018 at 7:31 am #25334Good luck with the C++ course. At first the use of Classes just seems to have a lot of unnecessary overhead and instances of Class re-usability are often sparse, but the concept is worthwhile for organizing your thoughts. I now personally prefer Functional Programming as being closer to C and generally more appropriate for the things I program on a Pi (it also helps with Python). However both have their place as this article makes clear.
August 30, 2018 at 11:21 am #25342One tip they have shown so far is to define your funtions in a header file and then just declare them in your souece code as this makes future changes easier. When you build your solution the linker includes everything in the .EXE file.
September 1, 2018 at 11:44 am #25449A little late on the timing, but I’ve been running some ideas through my head for some time now to update my computer desk/corner. The wife has decided that we need a new dining table and chairs plus sideboard so I’m going to build ( well buy and modify ) a new set up.
Currently comprises :-
I’ve already started by removing a 6′ x 2′ shelving unit that was a glorified storage/dump from the right hand wall, replaced it with the drawer unit and printer while the shelves are now in the garage as extra storage.
Current plan is to replace it with 4 of THESE of which 2 will be used complete and one will be utilised to form the cupboard for the computer base unit and the other to provide a lower shelf and keyboard shelf as per the current setup.
THIS will be used for the top surface/frame with the side extension spliced onto the main top to provide the full length needed.
I won’t be adding a monitor shelf as I’ve got one of THESE which will tidy the top up nicely and leave less dumping places.
That’ll keep me busy for a bit. Also buying a proper computer chair to replace the carver currently used as it seems carvers are out of fashion. That means a sand and varnish on the wood floor, but the wife wants to get someone in to do that!!??

Just one comment John, you may be better to put down some ‘office-style’ carpet tiles as computer chairs play hell with wood floors. (4 square metres should be under £20 – cheaper than getting in a carpenter!)
September 1, 2018 at 12:23 pm #25452It’s been down 6 years now since the extension was built and there are some heavy wear patches, both sides of under the table, under my chair at the desk, by the side of my TV chair and footstool, in front of the sofa where the wife sits to watch TV, so a full job can be justified, however messy!! Plus they wouldn’t sit well with the wife’s aesthetics!! I’ll get them to use a hard matt varnish and that should resist the dreaded castors for a while and I can laways touch in where needed at a later stage. Either that or get some CUPS to do the job.?

That is the real truth. Those wheels that sound and look such a good idea are like those on a pipe-cutter that will carve their way through many types of floor. I removed them and used some ‘glide type feet’. Some felt pads have then seriously arrested the rate of wear. This allowed me to do some local refinishing that has lasted about 5 times longer than the chair wheels took to destroy the original finish.
November 17, 2018 at 10:06 am #28352Well, a bit of progress – phase one completed. I’m still using the old desk, now modified, but it’s looking a lot neater overall.
Got myself THIS computer chair and solved the floor problem with THESE. I have to say they work extremely well and haven’t left a mark on the floor.
I removed the top shelf that carried the monitors and replaced it with THIS , needing to add one of THESE as one monitor didn’t have VESA screw holes. ( It’s a bit untidy as I could only remove the base and not the stem!!? )

Happier me, happy wife – bliss!!!
November 17, 2018 at 11:17 am #28355I have that exact chair. It’s held up well had it 2 years almost.
November 17, 2018 at 12:02 pm #28356Nice chair, I did not come across those wheels, but they look to be a very good choice, far better than the sharp edged metal ones. I might go for something like that when the present chair or pads wear down a bit. My current chair has had a number of years’ use and it gets used a lot.
November 17, 2018 at 12:48 pm #28357Had the chair for about a month now and all positive so far. The wheels are that smooth, if your legs touch the seat pad before your ar5e, it can slide back – less likely on carpet – so a hand on one of the arms makes sure you aren’t sitting down onto a vacant space!!
There’s a rocking mechanism that says it gives you about 15 degrees of movement – it feels more like between 5 and 10 – along with a recliner that you can lock in various positions. It’s been that comfortable I’ve even had the odd kip on it.?
