      Measurement conversions

I have converted, the below, but how do I convert to square metre it’s the .15 – .24 that throws me.

      13.6 feet = 415cm = 4.15metre x 10.6 feet = 324cm = 3.24metre

      Cheers

            Just make sure that is 13.6ft x 10.6ft and not 13’6″ x 10’6″

              I always thought .6 (after ‘ feet) was 6″ being half a foot = 12/2 = 6?

If you want to turn inches into a fraction of a foot then its 12/number of inches.

I sit corrected, never got on with maths. It’s funny that we are metricated yet my recently purchased tape measure is still in inches feet,mm cm not squares.

The actually measurement is 12 feet 10 inches on the tape, I added for good measure so it’s my 13.6. I would go in a store and say it’s 13 and half foot mate.

I was after a coversion to search the net for a decent price, these days I search all stores to find the cheapest for everything before buying.

It’s carpet and not my choice for M2, however I have found it better to go nearer the exact and search for 13’x 13′ = 4M x 4M and not add for good measure just patch it up in places with the cut offs.

I have now scrapped the internet search and go look on the high street for off cuts.

Support the high st, I watched a program about that the other night.

                        Cheers

If it’s carpet you’re after make sure you go to a small local shop if there is one. I saved a few hundred pounds by not going with the Carpetright.

I second the ‘if there is onebit of what you said. You can wear out an awful lot of shoes walking many ‘High Streets’ these days. Then if you find one, will they have anything close to what you would like? In general I found is better to go to a place that has a fitter who will install the carpet within a tenth of the time it would have taken me even in the recent past and they are responsible for any errors. Time things right and buy the underlay as well as the carpet and haggle for a good deal before letting someone else do the hard work. Carpet fell out of popularity a while back, so deals should still be possible in the right store. The only one I know near to us is as far from a high street as it is possible to be. A ‘shed’ at the back of a trading estate might undersell its location. However, that is about what and where it is.

                              Thanks

There is a few carpet shops, I go and look see if they have a carpet I am thinking of (my searches don’t bring up pattern carpet only plain or striped), preferably end of roll.

More car distance than walking and on the retail sites.

                              Cheers

On a side note, although the change to metric mesures and decimal coinage is a very good and sensible thing in most ways it has not done mental arithmetic any favours at all !

I have been partially metricated, in that I have memorised a few equivalents –

Cm to inches: 1 inch = 2.54 cm. Km to Miles: 1 Km is approximately 5/8 of a mile. Litres: 1 Litre = 1.76 Pints.

For the ones I am too lazy to memorise, I use this set of tables:

There is a shop in Louth called Trotters Traders. (seriously, they spotted a gap and bought the copyright) They sell just about anything you can name, and have a carpet & furniture shop to one side, a separate concern to Trotters. I have bought carpets from there, the owner is a fitter and will take an offcut of carpet and cut to any size, with taped edges. The company has other outlets in Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Mablethorpe.

Dougie Wadham, who began this chain has come a long way from working as a market trader and setting up his first store – check it out:

The stores literally sell almost anything you can name, I shop there a lot. It’s a Del Boy done good thing!

If you are really stuck just Google it:

                                    i.e “13.6 feet x 10.6 feet =”

Shortly after we went metric I visited my local wood-yard and asked for a length of 2 x 1 (inch) timber. The bloke looked at me as though I was a real numpty and in a sarcy voice said “we’re now metric sir. What you want is 50 x 25 (mm). “OK” I said – “so what’s a standard length?”  His reply…….. 8 feet!
