My lovely old HP Photosmart C5380, has reached the point of no return. For weeks now it has begun smudging pages. A diagnostic check revealed banding and discolouration across all 5 colours. I have gone through all possible checks and cleaning of printheads, alignment, etc. It settles down for a few pages, then starts smudging again. Checked with HP and a couple of shops* I know, but any repair/refurbishment process looks to be more than the printer is worth: I could put that money towards another printer.
Spec’s I need: A4, 5-cartridge or more if possible: I have always been able to print very good quality photo and graphics with the 5380. Good support and regular software upgrades, which is what I have come to expect from the HP Support, although they made the last ever upgrade last March. Wireless will be good if it works OK, in which case I will move it from under the desktop here, to the lounge and closer to the router. That puts it between the desktop and the kitchen, where SWMBO uses her laptop, and frees up some space for me here. Price of cart’s is not a problem: I have always used genuine HP and I budget for them. I am about to go looking for a printer myself, but I wondered if any Forumites had recommendations.
All advice appreciated guys, TY!
*Friends of long standing at both places, didn’t try to sell me anything and neither will give buying advice.

I'm out.August 25, 2018 at 7:44 pm #25163This article Best photo printers 2018 is interesting. “When it comes to making high-quality photo prints at home, the inkjet market has narrowed to a two-horse race. HP and Lexmark have become more oriented towards document printing, leaving Canon and Epson to slog it out in the photo arena. ”
I moved from Epson to Canon a few years ago and don’t regret it. I have a now obsolete Canon MG66500 5-ink Photo All-in-One with duplex and even with 3rd party inks I find the photo quality more than acceptable. The replacement looks like it’s the £85 Canon PIXMA TS6150 with very similar specs but adds Bluetooth.
Oh yes. Wireless is fine, printing requires very little bandwidth. Even my monster colour laser only has a 65 mbps adapter.
August 25, 2018 at 8:10 pm #25169Thanks Dave. After looking at Manufacturer pages and reviews until my eyes ache, I agree with this: –
” HP and Lexmark have become more oriented towards document printing, leaving Canon and Epson to slog it out in the photo arena. ”
HP printers no longer have what I need. I have temporarily decided upon a Canon TS 8150:
I also looked at its big brother the TS 9150. Comparing both, I think the 9150 is no better for my purposes than the 8150. I wanted at least a 5-cart, photo – orientated machine and this seems to fit the bill. I just hope that Canon Support is as good as HP has been: I’ve had almost 10 years of continual upgrades from HP, until the last in March. The software is unrecognisable from the original, still have the original installation CD, unused since first install. I looked at the 6150, which uses the same cart’s as the 80150 and 9150, except for the 6th cart, Photo Blue. I like producing friends and family photos, I enjoy the process, also posters and flyers for my son’s Stationary Engine shows. Well, it keeps me off the streets!?
Thanks for the Canon recommendation: I looked at Epsons, could not find one to suit my needs.

I'm out.August 25, 2018 at 8:22 pm #25171I’ve been pleased with mine, both sons and F-I-L have identical machines and friends have variations from £25 to £125. It saw my daughter through her A levels, I just wish she’d found the duplex button ?
I got the last lot of inks from Toner Experte on Amazon. 4 x XL sets for a tenner http://tinyurl.com/y94fxcjg
August 25, 2018 at 9:11 pm #25173I’ve always liked Canon printers, not just for their quality. I’ve had Epsom and HP, and both tend to dry the inks out if not used, which is something I haven’t found with Canon.
And Linux support on Canon seems more reliable (though it may have improved with HP and Epsom since I last tested either), and since that’s my exclusive desktop, it’s kinda a big win.
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
August 26, 2018 at 2:35 pm #25215Chose and ordered the Canon Pixma TS 6150, got £20 cashback refunded at checkout added a multipack of XXL Cartridges. My first wireless printer.
The 6150 ticked all boxes for me and was considerably cheaper than the 8150 or 9150 I originally liked.

I'm out.August 26, 2018 at 3:05 pm #25216This won’t help you bob, but I gave up on having a printer that could do photos, mainly cos I would weeks if not months with out printing one, then the ink would be dry or other issue. I found getting a basic mono laser printer is the then best thing I did. The cart last forever, and it always works when needed.
For photos, I’ll either go boots, usally for kids school prentations or yearly make a family photo book with whatever online service has can offer on. Probably costs me £25 a year for photos, which I find cheaper and less time consuming than printing my own photos.

Which is exactly the issue I had with everything except Canon. Canon seems to last longer with ink when unused.

August 26, 2018 at 4:16 pm #25220It depends on whatever we need from our printers, Steve. As I said earlier in the thread, I print a lot of colour graphics and photos. I was a self employed designer/printer as my last work before retirement, thought that was the end of that. Now I am printing photos for family and friends, making posters, leaflets and flyers for my son’s Stationary Engine club and shows. I really enjoy the work and I get recompense for materials, plus a bit more for my time. The main point is that I enjoy it and it keeps my few remaining working brain cells occupied.
Last April, the village Community Centre wanted me to do some work for them. I asked them to list what they wanted, showed some examples and gave them prices. Requesting payment for the work, did not seem to please them. So I showed them some old invoices from my printing work, with material prices as they are now. “But it’s for the village!”
“I am a Senior citizen on a fixed income, ” I said “Find a Printer who will do it for nothing, because I cannot afford to do that. What exactly has the village done for me?”
I have not had a response to that. Some of the people who ‘serve’ on the Community Centre Committee, are self-important, toffee-nosed oldpharts who think they should decide who does what, how it should be done, and who* should do it, in the village. I like to attend the CCC meetings, which have to be open to all villagers, just to upset the very few Toffee Noses with objections to some of their daftest ideas. Fortunately I am not alone: most villagers support my opposition and join in. It’s bedlam sometimes, I love it!
One rule for our CC car boots: it will rain on at least 75% of those car boot days, held on a huge green space which is the sports pitches. When it has rained heavily, they have to cancel. There is one on BH Monday, tomorrow. I warned them!
*Not themselves, usually.
