Lenovo B50-80. 128 GB SSD, around 45% free. Windows 7/64 Pro. Firefox latest 60.0.1 (now 60.0.2) Open Office latest 4.1.5. Kaspersky Total Security, updated daily. Usual Lenovo bloat*
A couple of days ago I had a problem with SWMBO’s Lenovo laptop. Whenever she typed anything, the text became jumbled: last characters would jump to the first line, then completely mix up. Sometimes it would not type at all, then suddenly throw out what she had typed, before mixing it all up again. You may imagine what this did to my ears and peace of mind…
I tried everything: Malwarebytes, Kaspersky scans, downloaded latest everything, searched various websites. In the end I think it was MWB which found an unwanted visitor, a PUP whose name I forget. Certainly after that was quarantined, it went back to normal and so did my peace of mind. Something I had never come across before.
*should I remove it all? Out of warranty now and I can carry out the tasks it performs in Windows, quicker and better. There is also a faster, better function in Kaspersky that I use weekly on this desktop PC.

I'm out.August 9, 2018 at 7:36 pm #24504I assume MWB was Malwarebytes, if nothing has gone wrong since it was on the naughty step, I would give it the heave-ho. Can you see a date for its arrival. That might give a clue to its origin.
August 10, 2018 at 6:53 pm #24545I have found several more ‘solutions’ to attempt before I elbow Lenovo, back up the laptop and reinstall without the bloat.
If anyone else here can suggest anything to deal with this, I would be obliged.

August 12, 2018 at 6:05 pm #24630Returning to this to report I have solved it.
I always suspected that it was a KB/Mouse problem, but became sidetracked by suggested ‘solutions’ from Firefox and Tom’s Hardware. Today I had an idea and uninstalled the KB. SWMBO uses the lappy with a Logitech wireless mouse M235: I found a software conflict between the Logitech drivers and the bog standard PS/2 drivers, so uninstalled PS/2 drivers.
Rebooted and it appears to be fixed. I typed up loads of stuff including song lyrics, Shakespeare excerpts and other stuff containing as many different characters as possible. It all typed perfectly, no jumbled text. SWMBO now happy with her lappy, which brings back some peace into my life. ?? I took the opportunity to carry out a Disk Clean and a Reflect backup. Next week I shall remove the Lenovo crap, thanks for the link JayCeeDee.

I'm out.August 14, 2018 at 9:07 am #24679Take a look for ‘hidden’ drivers Bob, they can also cause conflicts as old Logitech etc drivers just lurk around waiting to cause conflicts. I guess the nature of USB is to always keep old device drivers handy in order to just plug in without an installation..
August 14, 2018 at 8:44 pm #24696Thanks Ed, but there was only one Logitech driver ever on the laptop: the wireless M235 is the only mouse of any description, used with it. The main problem was the PS/2 vs Logitech conflict, and the KB drivers, which I uninstalled, rebooted and latest drivers were installed at reboot. I also updated the M235 Logitech software and drivers.
As an aside, I found a manual for the Lenovo Thinkpad B50-80 and discovered everything there that I might need to remove & replace battery pack, memory, (128GB) SSD, optical drive, LAN card and keyboard. It all looks simple and straightforward, should I ever need it. I have thoughts of upgrading RAM, removing optical drive and replacing with another SSD for storage.
Providing SWMBO allows that of course, it’s her baby…
