I’ve found a jolly good video that encumpasses laods of what you want to know about HDR and more. 🙂

HDR is on its way. We just need the prices to get real.

I have been picking the bones out of HDR for months now and the waters are very muddy indeed.

If you want a HDR Premium/HDR 10 certified display then you are going to need an OLED panel and I just can’t afford one.

As a compromise I just got a new Samsung TV that is certified HDR but not HDR Premium.

The TV uses Samsung Crystal Clear contrast enhancement on its LCD panel and it prcesses video internally as 10 bit colour but the panel is only 8 bit.

The number of options on the Display menu are also off the scale. I watched three YouTube videos that just covered my model TV before I had a clue about how I COULD set things up.

My declining vision might just detect a difference between HDR and UHD: atm I cannot detect a difference between UHD and 1080P, so my 1080P Sony Bravia and the 1080P Hauppage tuner on this desktop, is fine for me. And both together were a damn sight less expensive! Desktop TV tuner works with an HP 24″ VH240a monitor and looks great to my eyes.

It seems to me that the TV industry is approaching the point where they will have no more improvements to be had, and what is improved will come at a very high cost.

My feeling exactly, after the great ‘success’ of 3D TV I guess they need something to take away that sour taste. I am sure that HDR could have something to offer, though with much of the quality of TV output I am not sure that there is a huge amount of point. I am certainly not looking to ‘upgrade’ any further. Now, I would only buy anything new to replace anything that failed.

I don’t have a tv above 1080p, Its been 10 years since I chased specs on tvs. However my friend bought a £300 50″ tv (unknown name) that has hdr, it’s probably not even close to the best hdr, but when we was playing about with it, I was impressed with the 4k hdr we was getting off Netflix and YouTube.

Though it didn’t get me out buying a new tv for the WC, which would be about my only driver to a higher res tv. Also I’d of had to upgrade my input box as I think our amazon tv and rokus max out at 1080p.the older rokus are 720p. Which look great BTW on Netflix and BBC streams. So res isn’t everything.

I would not have got a new TV either but my 2 year old Hitachi (Really a Vestel) packed up. After that episode I did some proper research into who makes what.It turns out that in the low to mid range market its only really LG and Samsung that make their own sets.

As I fully expect my new TV to last longer than 5 minutes I went for the best I could afford. There really isnt much UHD content worth watching yet but I live in hope ?

In the meantime the TV does a really good job of upscaling DVD and BlueRay discs and the built in HDR shop demo is very pretty ?

Upscaling SD broadcasts is a bit odd. If you watch a good quality recording from recent years then the results are good but watching something from the 1970s produces noticeable blocks. Can’t think think why there should be a difference but there always is.

What a shame about Hatachi, we had one in the 80s and my old man swore they was one of the best. First house in the street with teletext lol.

That tv lasted about 15 years, to be replaced by wane with fast test (coloured short cuts lol)

For your tv to pack in at just over 2 years, in sure you could claim under the sales of goods act. A tv, no matter the price, should at the least work for 5 years. Once a tv was a minimum of 10 years.

Tbh I think our youngest tv is probably 10, oldest 15. There was a time where we would replace tvs as they failed, but now they are hardly ever on. Even if the lounge tv went, I’d probably just pull one of the older 1080p sets out of another room.

Funny as in 04 when we moved in this place, over about a 5 year period, we bought At least 5 sets, (as we had sky multirooom x5 at one point), now we are down to 3 sets. Non are on that often anymore.

We all use phone, tablet or laptops now. I can see a point where we woundnt even have one in the lounge.

Nothing against tv, and the amount of shite programs, more our consumption patterns have changed a lot.

Obvious solution for most of today’s TV programming – down the pan with it!

Graham, upscaling SD to 1080P on my Bravia is not detectably different from 1080P programmes on HD channels. When a 720 channel/video/movie is played, up comes “1080i” immediately followed by “1080P” and a much better screen picture. Also works perfectly with Humax Freesat 1080i channels.

I doubt you would need much in the way of add on boxes Duke. Amazon Prime and anything the Roku can get are covered by apps on my TV and there are many more that can be downloaded. I still have my Talk Talk YouView box plugged in but thats mostly for recording if im watching something else. I have an old 40GB hard drive plugged into the TV its self for most recording and pausing live TV.

Bought a 4K HDR TV recently and was blown away by the quality of the 4K Roku content on it. However a few months down the line I don’t notice anymore. Was at my mum’s yesterday (1080i Sky on a 1080p TV) – perfctly fine, didn’t think – oh that is worse – I remember we talked about thi on MM – bad sound will get or your thruppenies a lot more than a poorer (but stable) picture. Content is the king and alothough there is more of it there is also a lot more absolute tat.

Funny you should mention sound Black Lion. I never did get audio return over HDMI working with my sound bar but Richer Sounds won’t let it drop. They are sending a man out tomorrow to have a look.

I doubt they can do anything but its free and they also said they may upgrade the sound bar if they can’t get it working. All part of the service they said.

Even funnier you mention that – I did finally get ARC working – simple as a badly seated optical cable I don’t use it as am also using the receiver as an HDMI switch in a ridiculously complicated (for me) but simple (for the others) set up. I do love Richer Sounds btw….new telly came from there, price matched with a 6 year guarantee.

Richer Sounds are top notch on customer service.

My first 22″ Samsung TV I bought from them developed a strange glitch, sometimes it wouldn’t turn off or back on. I called them and explained the problem and they said bring it in and we’ll have a look. Couldn’t do that as the closest car park is to far for me on crutches. let alone trying to carry a TV. They paid for a taxi bothways, fault established, new tv, slightly better than the original.

That is superb PM. As a slight aside – if you opt for their paid-for warranty (i.e. if the extended warranty is not included on an item) and don’t invoke it then you get your money back at the end of the extended warranty period (as long as you remember – a challenge in itself these days!). Lucky enough to have an RS shop a mile away.
