Dan mentioned that he had a NAS based on a Raspberry Pi. For those interested a how-to is here. The only contributions that I would make are to use an SSD as the boot/storage drive as SD cards fail pdq under continuous write/read conditions. It is also advisable to use a Pi 3B+heat sinks as this is faster and has better wifi. (however using both wifi+Bluetooth reveals buggy Broadcom drivers)

One problem Ed, it’s NFS only.

Other than not being common on Windows networks what is the issue with that?

“NFS is often used with Unix operating systems (such as Solaris, AIX, HP-UX), Apple’s macOS, and Unix-like operating systems (such as Linux and FreeBSD). It is also available to operating systems such as Acorn RISC OS,[13] the classic Mac OS, OpenVMS,[3] MS-DOS,[14] Microsoft Windows,[15] Novell NetWare,[16] and IBM AS/400.[17] Alternative remote file access protocols include the Server Message Block (SMB, also termed CIFS), Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), NetWare Core Protocol (NCP), and OS/400 File Server file system (QFileSvr.400). [edit] I think the issues you may have had in mind have now disappeared (Windows Home may be an issue?). link

I double checked NFS can just be turned on in Windows Pro but in theory it is not available for Windows Home.

I have some (slightly wrong) instructions on setting up CIFS for a Pi Nas. I must get around to turning my experiments into something that can be replicated and written up. It’s been too flipping hot in the workshop and now it’s full of 2 student houses kit for the summer break.
