Is there an easy way to trace a vehicle from it’s number plate?

I’ve fancied a particualar private reg for years and now the MOT check on the dvla site tells you the make and colour (previously you had to tell it)

It turns out the number plate I want – J5 PED – is still on the Blue Land Rover it was first registered with in 1991.  This means that firstly the owner may sell me it but secondly that if the vehicle is scrapped then the nunber plate will be gone forever.

Is there an easy way to trace the owner?

Hi,  Don’t think there is – in times gone by you could ask the DVLA (on payment of many shekels) for the details but I think that has now stopped even tracing companies don’t bother with car numbers.

As an aside become a rogue unofficial parking compound owner and the DVLC will sell you the details you want!!????

PS Perhaps if the number has been on a L/Rover since 1991 it also has some significance for the current owner as well?
