I have dug out a Windows 7 True Image Backup (No 18),
This is the original setup that came with the Computer (2 years ago)
If I uninstall all the additional programs (I installed) back to factory and update Win7 will it be any good to sart again. Or would I need the Factory Backup (no longer on).
Also it now has Windows 10 on (upgraded from 7) so is Windows 7 obsolete.
Cheers
JohnJune 25, 2018 at 9:21 pm #22301I think that your Win 7 licence has been upgraded to Win 10, in other words if you try and update your Win7 backup it’ll probably fail as the licence is now used for Win 10. By all means try it, just make sure there’s nothing vital on the backup.
June 25, 2018 at 10:04 pm #22306Thanks PM
While I have been uninstalling, it’s been updating (in the background) happily.
I recall in the past I have had 7 on then 10, then back again. Using either and they have both worked with no problem and updated.
At times I have loaded 7 on the second Tuesday just to update it, then re backup, hence up to backup 18.
It’s the revering backI am not sure if it will be clean enough, ie bits left on.
Cheers
JohnJune 25, 2018 at 11:05 pm #22308Why would you want to go back to 7? It’s dead as a dodo. MS will only be keeping essentials update going to service the Corporates who won’t move until the last minute (and beyond) but pay them loads of $$$.
June 26, 2018 at 7:03 am #22309Thanks Dave
I don’t think there is any particular reason, just experimenting.
Cheers
JohnJune 26, 2018 at 7:53 am #22310Experiment completed, there came a point where I have lost everything (or no longer useable), As planeman suggested, it’ll probably fail as the licence is now used for Win 10. This happened after a Windows 7 update last night.
Dave, It’s dead as a dodo
Win 10 backup isn’t any better, been attempting repairs for the last hour.
Cheers
JohnJune 26, 2018 at 4:05 pm #22320There you go again JB: testing stuff to destruction!?

You know i’ve got the nack for these things.
W10 is alive again (not the backup though) fresh install. I have deleted W7 backups and don’t want to go back, Dave.
Cheers
JohnJune 26, 2018 at 6:09 pm #22335I am still using Win7, still love it. But if I’m still on my perch next year, time to buy a good laptop with 10 installed. I have a good new HP 24″ full HD monitor, which means that I could probably go for a smaller laptop with some smart bells and whistles.
Plenty of time to think over choices.

I'm out.June 26, 2018 at 6:18 pm #22336If I could get a cheap Chromebox with Android support to replace my little Dell 3050 as a media device my only Windows rig would be my X220. It’s hardly used but kept so I can ‘keep my toe in’ with Windows.
Sadly some media services don’t play nice with anything but Windows.
My Chromebook has changed how I view Windows completely.

I was in Japan for some system testing we were out there for a planned three week session. One the first day I simply walked into the room and the system went down, several times. It took them the rest of the day to reach the point where I could approach the terminals ready to start on the test schedules before it fell over again. The Japanese staff ate, slept and worked without going home for those three weeks – they had planned on 6 weeks schedule…
Since then I have tamed my find the problem knack, so it is a bit more sociable now.
Glad you have that PC fixed again.

As someone that has to use an absolutely torturous Win 10 install at work, and who only uses Win 7 on a VM at home (and TBH, the only thing I ever do with it is Windows Update), I would happily go back to 7 at work. 10 has proven to be a never ending stream of problems.
But, of course, I’m a Linux man.
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
