Good evening,
A farmer friend asked me to have a look at his dead PC this afternoon, its a hp pavilion slimline core i3.
I determined that the psu had packed up (Probable the huge amounts of dust in it. Actually used his compressor to blow it out, just filthy) . The psu is labelled as HP PC8044.
Would ebay be the best place to look for a replacement? Are they are specific to hp?
Thanks in advance
June 20, 2018 at 7:31 pm #22111IIRC it was Dell that used to have some proprietary PSUs. Could well be wrong there.
I’d have a good look at the knackered one and if all is well get a mid-spec, 400W odd branded job.
June 20, 2018 at 7:40 pm #22112The size is different, its not an atx. There wiring is the same, I used a standard atx I have spare.
I’ve just learnt from scan that they have small form factor psu now (Its been a while since I’ve Fixed a PC). I’m think it might be a sfx psu. but not 100% sure
June 20, 2018 at 8:01 pm #22113Hi Leon
It looks like your HP uses a standard TFX sized PSU but I could be wrong.
TFX supplies are available new but if you want to be sure of compatibility referbished HP supplies are on ebay for about £24
June 20, 2018 at 8:57 pm #22114I believe you are correct wheels of fire.
I’d rather have a branded psu, I hate for it to go wrong soon after.
I think TFX (think form factor) uses the same wiring as ATX and just the physical size of the unit that is different.
June 20, 2018 at 10:52 pm #22115I believe that the PSU you need is HP part no. 504965-001
(HP-D2201C0 -220W Power Supply Unit) ?
You’ll have a job finding a new branded model of this 🙂
Never trust an atom - they make up everything !
June 21, 2018 at 7:01 am #22123It might be worth checking the PSU for any fuses that have blown or that could have had a contact issue while being bunged up with dust before you give up on the old one. However, do be careful about the capacitors that can hold a high charge for a long time.
June 21, 2018 at 10:33 am #22128You are also correct Leon (except that its THIN form factor ?) TFX is electrically the same as ATX.
June 21, 2018 at 2:09 pm #22131oops. I did mean thin ?
I’m thinking either the
or
Never heard of game max, does anyone have any experience with them?
I have looked at the old psu and can’t see any replaceable fused but do get a strong smell of burnt electrics
June 21, 2018 at 3:08 pm #22133@Leon, with the aroma of electronics that have ‘let the internal smoke and burning smell escape’ that does sound like a terminal situation. The fuses to which I referred are sometimes inside the PSU metalwork case, hence my warning to be careful about capacitor charges. Are those small enough, the dimensions look quite large compared to the unit in my server.
June 21, 2018 at 3:53 pm #22135@Richard, I have had it open, probably didn’t explain myself correctly. I am an electrician so opening one doesn’t ‘phase me’ ( little electrical joke there ?, sorry).
I have been and removed it from the tower, its sat on my desk now. 85mm x 65mm x 175mm.
Interestingly it only has the 24pin, 4 pin and 2 sata power leads
June 21, 2018 at 5:59 pm #22137@Leon, no offence intended, I know little about people’s background and should assume less. If I stray onto potentially dangerous territory I always try to warn about the risks that might exist. I do not want someone to come suing me after the facts come to light.
June 21, 2018 at 6:54 pm #22142@ Richard, none taken my friend. Always best edge on the side of caution.
