I just finished fixing a non booting PC that had me stumped for a while.

The computer was stuck in a loop where it said it had to perform a start up repair. The repair would fail and the only option given was reboot which took me back to the beginning again.

I booted into the recovery command prompt from a DVD and tried sfc /scannow but that just told me that there was a start up repair pending !

After some searching I found that there are 2 flags in the registry that control this (should have written them down sorry) and reset them. After a reboot I got as far as a new screen with an error about being unable to verify driver “rapport” something or other. I thought the only option it gave me was reboot so I chose that and I was back at square one with the repair loop.

After I reset the flags and got back to the error screen I noticed there was a second option at the bottom marked reboot once without verification. After selecting option 2 the PC booted straight into Windows !

Only once though because the next boot took me back to square one.

After some searching I found that the Rapport driver is part of the Rapport banking software so the next time I got the system booted I uninstalled it.

It turns out that the Rapport signature cab file was corrupt and as the driver had marked its self as boot start and critical the system boot failed.

This may be a one off but I am always getting people having trouble with Rapport and I won’t have it on my PC.

I had that same problem when I was a Nationwide customer: they had me install that against my wishes with a vague threat about security. I junked it and told them I was never going to take their “Security” recommendation threats seriously again. To add insult to injury, NW closed my local branch and the nearest is a 44 mile round trip. Which is why I left NW. For TSB.??

        I'm out.

Another little trick Rapport likes to play on some computers when it feels like it is to open a full screen command prompt with nothing on it and then just sit there for 4 or 5 minutes. This looks to most people like the PC has crashed so they hit the power button and I cant blame them !
