256GB USB Drive

      I think maybe Dad has bloomered, checking about the TV he has purchased.

      I think it records to USB, I don’t know the ins & outs.

      Are 256GB USB Drives reliable enough to record TV programs (on the above TV) regular, like an HDD on a Freeview recorder box.

      I once purchased a 256GB USB drives, to find not reliable.

      Should I tell him or leave it as is.

        Why not use a USB hard drive? It’ll probably work out cheaper per GB and he’ll get more space.

            Until mum got Netflix and Amazon Prime I used an old ssd in an enclosure hooked up to mums TV so she could record stuff from her Samsung TV.

            Before you buy anything do some googling, not all HDD’s play nice with all TV’s, same goes for flash drives.

              Good advice not sure what to look for I did think a 3.5″ HDD Enclosure with a WD 500GB HDD. But then would it do for the TV.

              I need to look for one that’ll play nice with the with a Toshiba TV.

              I am struggling to find any recomendations.

                It’s states usb recording so it should work. And enclosures are cheap.

                 

                If it doesn’t work Large USB hdds are relatively cheap, I have an Samsung 1tb job that was about £40 2 years ago. And it’s quite amazing how many movies will fit on 1tb. Totally overkill for a DVR but the price form 500gb to 1tb is a couple of pound at most.

                      Was that down to some USB drives drawing their power from the TV and the TV not really supporting the requirement? If so device with its own power supply might avoid that issue, but as ever suer experience should be a guide. I also wonder what drive formatting the TV would understand/accept, that could be another point to check.

                        It was a powered caddy, had a wall wart similar to a phone charger but proprietary. It was down to the TV being particular about certain devices, I suspect they really wanted you to use Samsung ones. It also had to be FAT32 formatted.

                          I tried it with a USB 32gb Sandisk (USB2) and it records fine, not sure if it will except
                          500gb HDD.

                          Dad has found another problem he can’t handle

                          (I did tell him it only had a single tuner he could only record one and watch the same)

                          He was recording Emerdale and tried to turn over, giving a message this action can’t be done.

                          On that he has gone back to freeview recorder box (2 tuners) and left the TV recording.

                          Richard (just to say) when I inserted the USB stick it said format unknown, do you want to format
                          I said yes and it formatted, so the TV uses it’s own format.

                            John, OK at least that is not a problem and perhaps useful to know for the future. Maybe that is why some TV <-> drive combos do not work well.
