I thought I would get the thread started early. Seeing as ENGLAND is only in there this year from our neck of the woods the site will be taking on a bit of an England theme 🙂
Americans: Over Sexed, Over Payed and Over here, Wat Wat!
May 17, 2018 at 9:33 am #20788Tbh as they are not being hyped to death, and his choices seem decent, without following big names. I’m more inclined to like this team more than any since 96.
I still don’t care that much for them. Always liked Italy. Mainly cos their kits are always great as are the Germans white jursys.
May 17, 2018 at 12:11 pm #20793Main interest for me is our first game in Volgograd (aka Stalingrad). Been there three times and the first time I went they were building the Volgograd Arena (where we play Tunisia). The stadium is in the shadow of the giant “Motherland Calls” statue which is at the centre of the main memorial complex – and you can’t go anywhere in the city without seeing a monument, plaque or a preerved building etc. Hoping whoever does the coverage shows some footage of the monuments to the battle and perhaps a little history.
Also hoping no fans going there are dopey enough to play up or even without thinking drape a flag on a statue or monument…or drinks in the street (arrestable offence).
May 17, 2018 at 2:33 pm #20809Are the laws on drugs as draconian as they are in Qatar? Crack-head footie fans could find themselves in even greater problems in Qatar. i.e. dead.
May 17, 2018 at 5:29 pm #20815Kudos to Southgate for picking a young team, with a good mix of experience, the slapping down some of the older Sports ‘journo’s’ who predictably give the team no chance. (Step forward Lineker, who does not have a good track record). Southgate defended his squad well, especially the younger players. http://tinyurl.com/y6u9h82r
His selection is not a gamble, he says: “I don’t see it as a gamble and I don’t think being free of inhibition is gambling,” said Southgate.
Then he nails the problem in finding the ‘right’ players: “We pick from 33% of the league, which is quite a unique situation, but there is excitement with where we are going.”
All the massive spending on foreign players since the Premier League was created, with the ‘assistance’ of Sky and foreign owner’s billions, coming home to roost.

I'm out.May 17, 2018 at 6:40 pm #20818Nar, England was always crap. They have had a few good tournaments in over 100 years. They are a last 16 club at best.
If this goes on to the last 16 (or better) they are about on par with history. If they do better then let’s just enjoy the ride, if thru dont,no doing the press will hang them all out to dry as failures.
I don’t know id id even want to play for England.seems to be a lot of pressure, and zero reward.
May 17, 2018 at 7:36 pm #20823Good thing is I don’t think there is any hope or expectation – anything they do (e.g. get through the group) is a bonus. My interest might pick up if we do well, but for now have given enough of my time, money, travel, safety etc to the cause – will see how it goes.
May 18, 2018 at 8:21 am #20834I’m a football fan first so I’ll enjoy it anyhow. If england do well its a bonus.
Same with Liverpool,I’m lucky now we are playing good football now. I don’t get the real hatred between teams fans. I do it with the mancs, and Ev for the banter, but that’s it. I see us all as football fans first.
As if we didnt like football we wouldn’t all follow a stupid badge. As when you think about it, wat is club. The [incert team] you began to support, isnt the same team today. New owner, managers, players, in some cases grounds, and locations, we are lucky if a tea lady or steward is still their. So what is it we support? Something I think of often. Its the football. So I can’t hate anyone for choosing a different colour. I can hate them for being a bellend, nut not cos of the colours they was born into.
So like with England,I’ve never been patriotic, but I love football so Ill watch any game put infront of me.
May 18, 2018 at 9:20 am #20837Steve, that sums up my own attitude to football. I will watch almost any game: if I am passing the local Leisure Centre and there’s a game on, if I have time, I park up and watch. I also find some good games on “Freeport” on Freesat, one of the high-number channels. Quite a lot of Spanish, Portuguese and South American football on there.
??Club “enemies”? – Derby ***** County No.1, Man U of course. Local clubs Notre County and Mansfield are often visited by Forest fans who can’t afford away games, but need a “Footy Fix” every Saturday.?

I'm out.May 18, 2018 at 9:27 am #20838Football – a gentleman’s sport played by thugs
Rugby – a thug’s sport played by gentemen
And that gentlemen (and women) is my total interest in any forthcoming World Cup!

May 18, 2018 at 9:29 am #20839Let’s be controversial.
Why are we going to a tournament held in a country that commits attempted (and actual) murder on our own streets????
May 18, 2018 at 10:46 am #20845Ditto Qatar, most countries (ours included) do some very nasty sub-rosa things. On the world ranking scale of doing the nasties the US is up there along with Russia, while Qatar, Turkey Saudi Arabia etc fund and/or aid ISIS, and in many ways are much worse. Of course Israel also ranks pretty high on doing nasty things in public view.
I think if you decided to only go to ‘clean’ countries you would have a very short list of only New Zealand plus Scandinavian countries.

Absolutely correct! The UK is not as blameless as may be believed in that regard. Witness the Windrush episodes and the way government is turning and twisting, trying to avoid responsibility. Misguided, inaccurate political speeches and certain media pressure during the Brexit furore, have led to well-behaved, hard-working people from other countries who have been resident here for years in some cases, being assaulted and spat at in the streets.
Dwynne, this was a Thread based upon the Round Ball game, I hesitate to criticise your comment but I feel it was somewhat misplaced.

I'm out.May 18, 2018 at 4:47 pm #20863Meanwhile, back on the pitch…….
I’m quite happy nobody expects too much and it is all bit under the radar. Hart is out (feel for him a bit but he’s been throwing them in for two year), No Wishere – slight surprise (I’d have picked him). i think we have a “get out of the group but not much else” team. Love to be proved wrong…..don’t expect to be.

Sorry Bob but your comment is somewhat lost on me.

He is saying, if your not interested why are you commenting.
In regards to why are we going to Russia cos of there antics. If that was the case, we would have few if any nations to go, including our own. It’s just as bad as any of the big hitters.
The BBC would have us belive Russia is a terrible place run by horrible people. Swap RT for BBC, Russia for UK, and both wouldnt be lying.
The world is ran by horrible people. It’s just darwinism, the strongest and nastiest always win. They make the laws, and we follow.
Now let’s get this back onto football. We can open a thread in politics to discuss who lives in the worst country if one wishes.
Now Who do you think will win? In the World Cup that is.
May 18, 2018 at 7:26 pm #20872Germany will win in my opinion. Not the “best” team on paper but know how to win. Get right on my thru’pennies but think they will. You never know – 1990 we stumbled on a team due to luck/injuries that took us to within a whisker – but I think last 16 or QF at best for us. Ze Germans will win I fear.
May 18, 2018 at 11:25 pm #20876I really don’t follow international football, so I’m really ignorant to who is thst good, or not.
I try not to find out too much before hand, as I like finding out on the day.
I do know Belgium should have a great team, but no one seems to trully rate them that much. Maybe it’s cos the name carry no real history, but they could do well.
But to me it’s obvious who is going to win, Egypt.
May 19, 2018 at 12:33 am #20880I’m commenting as a person who will probably have to suffer hours of it on the telly – thank God for the off button.
Yes please get back on topic but can I suggest that we do this for all the posts and threads here?

May 19, 2018 at 9:25 am #20886It’s a fair point….I’m as guilty as most when threads go off at a tangent….but to be fair some of the best posts are ones that go wonky.
Belgium seem a bit like Holland used to be where the sum ends up being less than the parts.
Germany won the Euros in England, if they win the world cup in Russia would just leave the USA!
