I have a Corsair M50 mouse, which I like very much, both for size and weight. A few months ago, the wheel started doing its own thing. If I scrolled up, it decided to go up three clicks and down a random number etc. Eventually unplugged after buying a new Corsair mouse.
New mouse is both too small and too light for me (though it does do a pretty light show). Today, I decided to have another look at the M50, so did some googling and came across a trick that was reported to work, which was WD40 on the wheel controller.
Mouse dismantled, and off to hunt down my WD40. None to be found, but I did find a can of spray 3in1 oil, and thought “what the hell”, so a toothbrush clean and a dousing of 3in1, mouse re-assembled, and it’s working a treat.
I expect problems at some point as the oil will probably accumulate dust. Any ideas how I’ll clean it down at that point?
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
May 12, 2018 at 11:07 am #20600IPA will do the trick without eating the plastic.

May 12, 2018 at 5:09 pm #20617Bit hoppy for my taste – you will probably need to order it on line. In the US they dilute it 50:50 with water and call it ‘rubbing alcohol’, I think a more dilute mix is called Surgical Spirit in the UK
May 12, 2018 at 7:08 pm #20624I have a little 250ml spray of rubbing alcohol. It’s great, especially for cleaning glasses. It is very poor for inorganic things like oil but when you’ve finised a quick clean with alcohol is best.

May 13, 2018 at 7:06 am #20635Agree that even 100% IPA is a very weak solvent, but it will mix sufficiently with light mineral oils to move them without harming plastic polymers.
The greater the percent of water that is added the worse the solvency so I’m not surprised to hear your comment about rubbing oil being poor in removing oil. If you need to increase the solvency of the IPA just put its container in a bath of elbow hot (not boiling) water. (IPA boiling point ~80 degrees C)
Acetone is a great solvent but it will ruin the finish of most plastics.
May 13, 2018 at 9:10 am #20639Hopefully it will take a while before I need to clean up. Unfortunately, the glide pads on the bottom of the mouse cover the screw holes, and I only have one more spare set.
Nevertheless, some booze based solvent will probably have to be purchased. Maybe a couple of dodgy vodka miniatures?

May 13, 2018 at 10:06 am #20640What a waste of IPA (India Pale Ale)
May 13, 2018 at 10:48 am #20641I buy 99.9% ipa by the liter on eBay. Great stuff.
I was doing on project once, and notice the extractor fan was looking grubby, took 2 mins to wipe the out side down, then I dug inside of the hood (never do that) and spent the next hour attacking it with ipa rags.
Point is it will clean everything. Between that, white vinegar and baking soda, (and tescos cheap detol clone) you don’t need nothing else ever. Chuck in duct tape and you could build, fix or clean anything ever.
May 13, 2018 at 4:31 pm #20644I agree with you Steve, it is a good repair-man accessory. The biggest point in its favour is that it cleans plastic things without eating them – like meths or vodka but better.
I would add a Neodymium magnet to your kit, for the frequent times you drop a screw into the works. (but watch how you use the linked one it will pull out your fillings if you are not careful!?). I encased my magnet in Sugru and made a Sugru loop at one end so I could fish for things if needed. (HSE note: these magnets can be dangerous! One on its own can jump at a piece of iron and nip your fingers, get two of them jumping together and they can cause major damage to any bits of flesh trapped between them)
May 13, 2018 at 8:32 pm #20664Lol I have a hand full of 3 or 4mm neodymium magnets just for this job.
Also i built a Tortoise enclosure for my tortoise (what else) built into my kitchen. I used magnets to keep it shut, as she would take a run up to bash the doors open. My tortoise house is a masterpiece. It has 1 way windows so she can’t see out. Torts don’t like to see out, they get spooked.
