Today we had a lovely day in the sun. Drove to Mablethorpe South End, where the Grockles are outnumbered by locals, playing and picknicking in the Dunes. Walked our longest walk since before the Op and SWMBO’s new hip, and looked at the latest stage of the Beach Renourishment programme, led by a Dutch company. Huge dredger pumping out sand and shingle through pipes and up to the beach, for cranes and diggers to pile up towards the Coastwalk. Unfortunately, it was very hazy* and could not get clear photos. What results from the renourishment, besides protecting our coast and building new dunes, is an ingress of flints from what was Prehistoric Doggerland. When they move up the coast, I will be back to that area of beach to wander about picking up flints from Neolithic times. Marvelling at the sharp edges of very ancient tools which have stayed sharp for so many thousands of years.
Anyway, as we got to a seat occupied by an obviously younger couple, they saw we were cream-crackered and gave us the bench. The wife left and the husband stayed to talk. He was from Eire, about 40 miles South of Dublin and I mentioned people I knew in Dublin, including a bar where an Army mate took me for a week (pre-“Troubles”) It was a bar belonging to my Irish mates’ mum, and the guy who stopped to talk was a cousin of the family. Then he asked where I was originally from and I gave him the name of my old Notts village. His daughter and SIL had just bought a house there. We got on great after that and are invited to their ‘van tomorrow evening for a meal.
Later we had a huge locally-caught cod and good brown chips. My appetite has recovered, anyway!
Coincidences…
*A sign of some different weather around here soon, usually.

JohnMay 8, 2018 at 8:24 am #20465Bob or anyone else, You should check out the book, The Improbability principle, by David Hand. It’s very good. He argued there is no such thing as coincidences and miracles. On average we should all see a ‘miracle’ At least once a month. Great if you like probably and stats, not so good if you believe in miracles.
Wow, that Amazon link is great, it gives you the first two chapters, if you hit the preview button.
May 8, 2018 at 6:13 pm #20474I enjoyed that portion of the book Steve, but I have no wish to buy it. Two reasons: 1) – there was quite enough to think about in just that bit. 2) – I like to allow for a little bit of magic in my life, and coincidence, to me, is one of those little bits of magic. I don’t want to have everything possible given an explanation. Physical laws are one thing, but dissecting every little bit of everyday life, is another.
Now here’s a bit of serendipity, a happy bit of magic which actually caused me real anxiety at first.
Late last year, I had what looked like a severe Prostate problem. My ding a ling bled and it scared me to death. I saw a lady GP who sent me for CT and MRI scans. The bleeding stopped, but infrequent demands from my bladder did not. The scans found that the Prostate had stopped bleeding, just settled for being enlarged and was OK, no cancer or any other growths. Big relief: and then my GP sent for me, having made an appointment to see another consultant. The scans had shown a growth on the tail of my pancreas, which led to the recent Op. Point being, without the prostate problem, scary as it was, the malignant pancreas growth would have continued and the probability is that I would at some point in the next year, be dead from very painful Pancreatic Cancer. Deep breath, carry on….
Do you believe in Doppelgangers, the fact that somewhere there is another person who looks like you? No, neither did I, until I started Air Tech training in the AAC. Came out of my block one fine Saturday morning and met some of the new intake in the next block. There was a guy who looked just like me, I mean just like me, a mirror image. He was even my height to the inch. None of my mates, or his mates, could believe it. We had a conversation and discovered that he had a totally different family name and ancestral background. We also discovered that we didn’t really like each other! Fortunately, he failed the course within a month and disappeared back into REME, probably to be a Vehicle Mechanic or some othe Trade. It seems that his personality was completely unlike my own: I believe I am an optimistic extrovert, interested in everything and everybody. He was a right surly, miserable bugga who rarely talked to his own intake, none of whom appeared to like him either.
Such is life!
Maybe my granddad had a very good bike. ? maybe his grandma was – well, you get the picture.??

I'm out.May 8, 2018 at 6:54 pm #20476They are growing linseed in these parts. Imo the soft blue is much more subtle and pleasant than the yellow menace.

About 27 odd years ago I shared a nice house in a not so nice area of Cardiff. I went out on my mountain bike to get some beer and smokes from the local 7-11. Newly done, spiked, fluorescent green hair and all. Put the bike inside the shop, in the corner out of the way by a chest freezer, hard to see it. Within 3 minutes the bike and I were in the back of a Police van.
Somebody matching my description exactly, lopsided ears and all, riding a mountain bike was wanted for attacking 3 women in 2 days in the area. They had fingerprints and the whole thing was quickly cleared up when I showed them my partially amputated finger which is VERY unique.
Gits left me in the town centre instead of taking me back to where they picked me up, said I was lucky!!!.
May 8, 2018 at 6:57 pm #20478My mother swore I had one in the neighbouring town where I grew up. She was there one day when I was about 19, she approached the guy and was speaking to him, he thought she was crazy, and told her where to go. Lol.
With regards to coincident when we moved to this house. My son got a girlfriend, turned out she lived in the house nextdoor but moved a couple of months before we moved in (my lovely christian neighbour chased her out). Also the girlfriends mum worked in our local option.
When we first went in, she noticed our address, and we worked out our kids was dating. Small world.
May 8, 2018 at 7:42 pm #20479I went to school with my clone. He was just under a year younger and no relative at all – not even going back a century or so. We were very good friends and our likeness used to confuse our gfs no end. I’m convinced that everyone has at least one unrelated clone.
May 8, 2018 at 8:20 pm #20480I went to work thousands of miles from where I went to one school and found that one of those who arrived there had been in the year above me at the small school we both attended. He went on to another carer, became a minister and died very young. Not a coincidence really just an example of how small the world can be.
