I just had a strange experience when checking for updates. My settings are “Check for updates but let me decide whether to download and install them.” I accessed Updates and found a red cross beside the words “Check for updates.” Clicked, it took ages to tell me that I could not update, giving “Unknown Code” 8024402F. Besides the Update Check was the fact that I had no Updates (the list was full) and “Updates were made” – Never. I found this code on the Microsoft website, then I used the Microsoft Update Fix Tool to try to sort things out. I also noticed that all my Updates listed, were “Successful”. The Microsoft website advised me to use the Network Troubleshooter – (?!) which I did, no prob’s, network all OK.

The Update Fix tool did not work. So, in the spirit of ‘Switch off and switch on again’ I restarted the desktop. Went back to Windows Update and there was no red cross. Tried “Check for updates” which worked faster than previously, and received “There are no updates available for your computer.” I would love to know what was happening, but at least it’s all working again.

When the Thought Police arrive at your door, think -
      I'm out.

I had something similarly confusing with a Windows 10 machine last month. I deleted all of the update records restarted and all was well once more with the world. In your case I can only think that the copy loaded into the machine had something to be desired and that a reboot cleared it out and allowed a cleaner environment in which to run.
