I always thought the E-Bay keys were for clean installs only, but just upgraded my V110 with one.
Just change the product key and the upgrade happened in about 5 minutes.
April 16, 2018 at 8:41 pm #19741Cool indeed. May look into that for the in laws lappy after I’ve done the ssd swap. All mine are pro.
April 17, 2018 at 9:40 am #19753Did mine a while back. Worth it purely for the Bitlocker (as long as you have a TPM).

April 17, 2018 at 10:17 am #19756Out of interest what does slmgr /dlv in the command prompt show?
Does it make any real difference if it is a Volume MAK key?
April 18, 2018 at 1:09 am #19785Well Ed from what I can find out it means you are using a volume licenced key.
Users with a volume licence can choose to activate their PCs in one of two ways, Key Management Services or Multiple Activation Key.
KMS requires that the PC be connected to a network running a KMS server so is unsuited to stand alone systems.
MAK allows a fixed number of activations that is held on Microsoft servers and it is decremented with each new installation. There is no way to tell how many activations are left.
Like I said thoug its just what I read ?
April 18, 2018 at 9:03 am #19795It’s a retail key. I use MAK keys and IIRC the console does show how many you have activated.
April 18, 2018 at 12:38 pm #19798Yes dave yours is a retail key but Ed asked about a volume key ?
April 18, 2018 at 1:05 pm #19799And out of interest the name of my windows installation is core edition. Whats that about ?
April 18, 2018 at 1:12 pm #19800Oh I looked it up. Same as home edition. no special server stuff
April 18, 2018 at 1:24 pm #19803I think core ed is the new RT.
April 18, 2018 at 1:36 pm #19804Yes, Ed was wondering if what I’d bought was a MAK key and if so would it make any difference.
I’m still not sure how the sellers come across these keys but I’ve been doing it long enough with W10 and O2016 to know they are legal enough.
April 18, 2018 at 8:21 pm #19822<p style=”text-align: left;”>Most likely will keep working if the key comes from a big company. They only have to request a few more activations if they run low.</p>
April 18, 2018 at 8:46 pm #19824It’s not a MAK key its a retail key. They’re even cheaper than the (MAK) keys I get from Microsoft at charity rates.
