I looked at the end of year obituaries for the celebrities and came up well short of the life span that the Government and the life insurance actuaries say I’ll live too whenever I mention buying an annuity.
So just may be being in the public eye is bad for your health?
Then again the average life spans might just be propaganda to justify the abysmal returns given on annuities.
April 2, 2018 at 8:02 am #19093I hope you are not buying an annuity at this time, rates are stupidly low which means zero risk for the annuity company and maximum risk for you.
With respect to life span, it all depends where you live, some parts of the UK are positively unhealthy. Fried Mars Bars could account for Scots dying young, but I did not know the inhabitants of Pembrokeshire had a taste for that delight! The inhabitants of Kensington obviously live longer due to their healthy jogs around Hyde Park and proximity to Harley Street. link
This map is a little dated, but you can explore the more recent ONS data if you wish. link
April 2, 2018 at 8:11 am #19094It’s that Rock and Roll lifestyle that gets a lot of celebs before their “time”. It’s the one’s like Ken Dodd that have a handle on life – relatively speaking – that seem to live longer.
April 2, 2018 at 10:40 am #19098I think you have a good handle on the matter there. Performers can also lead a very disjointed life with one night here another there, always travelling often lonely and eating poor food in poor lodgings, or over eating due to the loneliness. Where those factors are not in play things can turn out very differently and a few actors, who could be subject to the same sorts of issues, have achieved much more ‘normal’ life spans; some quite extended compared to the averages. There could also be other factors in play, some have their own personality and perhaps for some, the genetic and nurture factors cut them out to be performers, but also left them with ticking health time bombs. It is always sad when anyone goes, popular performers tend to get greater notice, but I have seen a number of far younger folk die from such as cancer or latent issues that lurked within. You should also remember that an average is made from those who die early and those who die far later.
April 2, 2018 at 10:44 am #19099I noticed Bill Maynard “Green Grass” went the other day as well which is another sad loss. One of my fave’s.

April 2, 2018 at 11:00 am #19100Yes, I had his passing in mind, though could not recall the name, none of these are happy events. Though he did have a fairly good innings having brought pleasure to many, his passing will also affect a large number.
April 2, 2018 at 6:14 pm #19113Some of the “celebs” as portrayed on TV getting up to all kinds of stupidity, do not fit my idea of someone whose life I should be prepared to celebrate. However, those like Doddy and Bill Maynard had real talent and should not be confused with their artificial, self-promotional counterparts.
As for a Rock’n’Roll lifestyle: how come these guys are still with us? Only the Greatest Rock Band on the planet: –
The Rolling StonesMembers, Ages:
74 years (26 July 1943)Mick Jagger 74 years (18 December 1943) Keith Richards
70 years (1 June 1947) Ronnie Wood 76 years (2 June 1941) Charlie Watts
81 years (24 October 1936) Bill Wyman 69 years (17 January 1949) Mick Taylor

And Mr Jagger is just about to become a father again. For the EIGHT time!
There are those who believe that Keith Richards has been dead for some time, but no one dares tell him.
Or he’s a Zombie – I mean, just look at the guy!

Brilliant guitarist though.

I'm out.April 3, 2018 at 10:35 pm #19188I understand that the life expectancy of a newborn is actually lower than that of someone who has already reached 65 (79.1 for boys and 82.8 for girls) compared to another 18.5 years for a 65 year old man and 20.9 years for a 65 year old woman.*
Those who don’t live until they’re 65 drags the new born life expectancy down.On the whole the average celebrity seems to pop off earlier.
The ones who seem to last the longest don’t seem to retire. Doddy didn’t and June Brown hasn’t.
Perhaps retirement which equates to loss of fame and (usefulness) is more damaging.
