Is anyone good with an iron. My level is joining a few wires. I could do with a favour with someone that can solder surface mounted consonants on a pcb.
If is strip down and source the micro USB port, would some one like remove the old one, and solder on a new. Please.
It’s my boys moto G4, ive just swapped out the battery and its now clear it’s the charging port that is at fault. Defo user error!
Usually the charge port, is on a separate ‘daugher board’ that is easily replaced, but not on the G4! So help is required.
I’d send it to a shop, but the phone doesn’t warrant the costs, and it may not even work after the fix. So don’t worry, if it comes back, swapped and still broken, you won’t be held responsible. You can’t break somtjing that’s already broke. This is a last throw of the die for this phone.
If we sort the chargin charging issue, then ill order a new screen, (£20), but I’m holding off on that for now. Also the aux port need replacing, bit that’s a stand-alone plug-in affair. Actually, i should check first if the internal connector on that has come loose before i sort it.
Any offers? ?
Also ill cover postage and a pint or two for tour troubles.

March 26, 2018 at 5:02 pm #18532Sorry, that is two steps beyond my capabilities. Micro usb ports are a pain as the wires are so small/flimsy. Is it worth trying the old solder reflow tricks with a hot-air gun? I have one of these the fine nozzles are PROBABLY capable of just directing the required heat ~300C to the limited area of the usb port to reflow the required connections. If I had to do it for myself that is what I’d use in the full knowledge that I’d have only a 20% chance of success and 80% chance of totally nadgering it!
A more practical suggestion would be to see if there is a local Men’s SHED in your area, some SHEDS have retired old pharts with the required skills who like a challenge in return for a small donation to the SHED for equipment, running costs etc. My local SHED has a couple of retirees who used to work with prototype MOD electronics stuff and are dab hands in using the necessary equipment. They spend most of their time now making up stuff for disabled folk (young and old) e.g. door alarms, and nfc kit for those supporting dementia sufferers etc.
March 26, 2018 at 11:11 pm #18559Thanks both.
Ed, it’s a user error. Ie kid constantly buttimgvtention on the port. I think the insides of the port a fubar.
Lee, thanks. I’ll source the correct micro USB port for the G4, apparently i need a certain one. So ill get on that and let you know ?
March 27, 2018 at 7:48 am #18580If you look inside a micro usb port there isn’t much there except simple connections, but he could have broken it away from the mobo. Btw I am guilty of an error SMD reflowing is at 275F (not C as I mistakenly posted).
While looking for a pic of usb internals (I did not find one), I came across this YouTube – the man is a bodger after my own heart, and his fix would also make most charging ports teenager-proof, but totally ugly!
March 27, 2018 at 10:36 am #18601Many years ago one of my pass times was putting the ‘legs’ back onto transistors. Avoidance of excessive heat blowing the device was always the biggest. I tinned the new wire then holding the soldering iron a distance up from the repair point melted the solder and touched it against the broken leg and hoped to make a patent joint. I don’t think I could do it now but I wondered if a similar technique could be used on surface mount devices like the tiny USB sockets – good luck to anyone who is up for the challenge.
Ed, I quite liked the lateral thinking of the Youtube chap, though I was not so taken with the music sound track.
March 27, 2018 at 1:22 pm #18607That’s a great fix ED. If the lads runs out unfixable in thr normal way, i defo have the skills to do that. It would makes it pointless as a mobile them (defo for a teen), but i have one that that lives puggued in, that handles all the home automation etc. So i could repurpose the moto g4 for that. If all else fails.
