Are there any decent ways of getting Internet without signing up for 18  month contracts?

We may be staying somewhere for 6 months and don’t want to get stuck with something.

Or does it not matter much, if I just pick BT and take the contract with me if another move happens?

If you are a relatively light user, you could go 4g at 15 to 20gb a moth for about £20.

Or call tt or bt and see if you can move and take a contract with you. I’d only go with a single phone and bb provider just to make the switch simpler if needed.

Shouldn’t matter to much – you should be able to take the contract with you. I moved last year – took a contract out in May, moved in September.

Coming up to change it now – not sure if I’ll change mind, but it’s probably wise. Wont be Sky as I don’t want to use their router.

Double post but on the back of this, I just checked Uswitch and the like and I’ve switched to NOW Broadband – probably will be stuck using the router provided as it’s essentially Sky I guess, but I’ll have a play and see if it can be used as a modem mode, like the Virgin one.

£20 a month (including line rental) for 38Mb fibre – bit of a drop from our 55Mb but shouldn’t be to noticeable I hope! Saves us almost £30 a month. It also had the option not to have a contract (for a one off £30 setup fee).

I believe Plusnet will do you something. I am sure they offer some packages without contract. I am a big fan of plusnet. I know others have had problems with them but I guess there problems are forced on them by there parents “BT”.

I only pay TT £24pm for line rental, 80/20 and truly unlimited data. Ive never been able to get them to throttle me. For the last 5 years, we have been over 700gb down, every month. It’s probably more mow, but since tt went truly unlimited across the board, they retired there online usage meter. Which i liked, but understood why they retired it.

Now BB had some bad PR over exams time. Can’t recall what it was, but remember as that how i found out they now do BB. But i can only guess that its the same as sky, given ntv is just a sky subsidiary. So whatever you don’t like about sky, you’ll probaly not like NTV

Why was tour sky bill so expensive, did you have some type of tv too? I really can’t see the point in having sky tv now. The Now tv £7 pm and bt sports £5pm and Netflix £7pm covers the the spectrum (for me) that skys top package did, for the price of sky’s lowest package.

So now £46pm covers what once sky cost me £115 (sky muli room) plus about £35 for line rental and bb. For the few things i (dont) miss, I’m happy with my £110pm savings. I’d imagine now sky tv multiroom plus sky bb is cheaper than my once mental tv an bb bill, but even so, i couldn’t be tempted to go back.

Oh i forgot, ialso get tt tv in with my bundle. Bit given we cant get the ota channels here, i never looked it up. I did at the inlaws house, and the ui they use is the best in the business. Cant recall the name (youview maybe), its brilliant. My inlaws are terrible with tech, but they got it without instruction, the seamless way they use OD baked into the tv guide is five star.

To get wifi to the inlaws tt tv box i had to use a TpLimk nano travel router 300mnps, its been running with out fail, over behind my inlaws tv for 4 years, without them calling me once that their tv was on the wobble. That’s quite impressive indeed.

Looks like the nano router may no longer be for sale. Amazon only seem to have the 150mbps model at twice the price i paid for mine. I also have the hootoo travel passport version, that i use in the car to create a media server in the car and a lan for in car entertainment, that too just works and is over 2 years old.

Amazon still sell the 300mbps TL-WR802N for £25 and an Ac750 version for £30 http://tinyurl.com/yctqwuuo

Cool, god knows why i couldn’t find it. I paid £23 my Gmail tells me. So not a bad rise consisting the state of the pound. The 150mbps model i found was £50!

A great bit of kit, that iirc can do 4 separate jobs. Tplink kit never seems to fail. My home plugs, are the same, set and forget. It’s amazing, and sad, when you’re amazed something just works, and keeps on working.

When I had a 6 month move I went with my mobile provider and a home Wifi modem/router using a pay as you go Sim Card.

Fortunately for me the rented accommodation was next to a Mobile mast on top of a local government building and the internet was actually faster than that I’d enjoyed(pun) previously on a land line connection.

I sold the modem/router for about £10 less than it had cost me once I’d moved. I even threw in the SIM card.
