Folder Lock
I have tried examples using code, I have encryption tools.
I just want to lock my folder, like the front door, you put the key in and turn it (password) the door opens.
with encryption you have to point it to where you want it to open,
ie C/User/Documents/Docs and then you have another copy (unlocked)
My idea/need is to click on the folder enter password and it just opens like the front door and you enter, within the drive it’s stored on. The same folder now unlocked, once finished you lock it back up. No paths to follow just in/out.
Can it be done.

JohnMarch 7, 2018 at 10:18 am #17355Hi John. I’ve just tried this and it works OK! You control the locked file with the batch file – when you lock it the Locker actually becomes hidden (until you unlock it again!)

March 7, 2018 at 11:34 am #17358I still use TrueCrypt. It may be ‘insecure’ (which isn’t true) but it’s going to keep anyone that’s wants access to my docs out. And if the gov wanted access they would be free to try crack it open if they wanted. Or give me a warrent.
Also the fact to be able to put file inside files to hide them is a must for any person traveling to America. They can make you open you PC at customs now. So if you have something as innocent as a loads of movies for the flight, could make entrance awkward if you win the search lottery.
There is now a fork of true crypt , vera crtypt iirc. However the last time i checked a lot of 3rd party houses still say TC is still deemed very safe to use. Its the way it all shut down over night was the strange bit.
I like it, it’s simple and I’ve must of been using it since 2006 or 7. Old dogs and all that….

Thanks Duke I searched TrueCrypt, it led me to bitlocker, I locked the drive, yet it never asks for a password and just opens as per?
perhaps the rig needs re starting? I will see.

JohnMarch 7, 2018 at 12:29 pm #17365Be careful trying out encryption tool after encryption tool on a folder .Its a sire fire way to break it.
Test one. If it failed your needs, deter the folder and the software, do a full restart .than try the next. A bit tedious i know, but you could get in some trouble otherwise.
Well probably no, the PC is probably more clever than my mind, but my gut says be gentle when plying with powerful tools.

I managed to sort out Jukebox link and folder locker.
I have tried and tested several times but will keep an unlocked version in a drawer, just incase.

JohnMarch 7, 2018 at 9:11 pm #17370I use Bitlocker daily, but it wont help you in this case as it encrypts the drive, not a folder. I use to encrypt my USB sticks. Generally needs a TPM module in the PC, my gaming machines at home don’t have them but my work laptop and my personal laptop do.
Alterantive is to encrypt the files with something like Cryptomater or Boxcryptor.

Edit: it says for cloud files, I don’t cloud.
Edit: Edit: It’s installed I open it all I can do is add vault, but when I click on + nothing happens.
Maybe it won’t work without cloud?

JohnMarch 11, 2018 at 11:24 am #17468I agree with Duke, TrueCrypt or better still Veracrypt are more than good enough unless you have Mil-spec needs (both are probably even good enough for that purpose but they are not certified).

I am using the one jukebox suggested, that seems to do the trick.
If I am missing something in truecrypt for folder locking, then please tell me.

March 12, 2018 at 8:21 am #17506Ed thanks for the insrtructions on truecrypt, I followed it, set one up, when I try to open it (to put files in) it asks me what to use to open it (paint – notepad etc) I created 3 all the same results.
Wasbit I tried a few I am treading dangerously on the links, also a lot are for XP. It’s much appretiated, I may go through some more laters.

JohnMarch 12, 2018 at 9:36 am #17509My guess is that you did not follow the instructions and forgot to ‘mount’ the encrypted container. You have to mount it and unlock it before Windows Explorer can see it as a folder it can open.
Try these instructions for Veracrypt (should be applicable to Truecrypt too), they may be a little more simple for you to follow.
