Very annoying issue. I bought one these last week from cash converters and I think the over all laptop is great despite the age. I put an SSD in and it flies along just fine and the screen size is perfect for my line of work. When purchasing it I thought I would first check it out on the counter “with out being plugged in with charger”! All seemed fine, Windows 7 full of HP Junk, the usual.
Any how got it home and updated it and this is where the problems started. As soon as the ATI Driver updated every time I open a new window or the start menu the screen flickers and bounces about. Remove the driver and the problem goes away. How ever if I leave the updated driver on the machine and remove the power supply all is fine “Except on windows 10”.
Mint is the same to. Windows 10 is also pain in the arse to block driver updates but I have done it using a “Temporary MS Tool”.
The problem with avoiding the driver update is crap web page rendering and just not as smooth as it should be.
Any ideas anyone?
P.S It is under guarantee for 6 months but would rather not take it back.

March 5, 2018 at 5:39 pm #17317Could you have ever so slightly disturbed the connection to the screen when fitting the SSD? The fact that two different OS types produce the same symptoms suggests to me that there is a hardware rather than software issue, though I am happy to be shot down.
March 7, 2018 at 8:45 pm #17369Not had much time to reply, Thanks, but no it’s not that Richard. However the latest mint is not offering me any drivers for ATI/AMD gfx and everything seems to be working fine. The first mint I tried “17” was giving me the same results as windows when I installed drivers so some magic is at work in 18. To be honest I think 18 should be offering me drivers but something as gone wrong and I am not complaining about it. ?

March 8, 2018 at 1:08 pm #17386I am glad that it has settle down, however I have known the default OS drivers to use fewer of the capabilities of the hardware and I am concerned that this could be the issue. I had that issue some years back with a desk top and had to replace the graphics card as the artefacts just got worse and worse. I wish you good luck with this one.
