We haven’t had one of these for a while, so, what computer would you buy or build if money was no object, and why?
EDIT: Got to be honest, this might do it for me this time around: ?
January 13, 2018 at 1:25 pm #15636I have to be honest and say that now my needs can be met by quite modest kit I’ve pretty much lost interest. Maybe a top end ultrabook.
I’m not that much into bling either, so I’d probably end up with a Lenovo Thinkpad 13 rather than an ASUS Zenbook ?
January 13, 2018 at 2:11 pm #15640For fun I might go for the one that Dave referenced, http://tinyurl.com/ybkb2lfn
Though its power might be a bit of a limitation as a full replacement. Apart from that like Dave I don’t have a need for a rip snorting behemoth. I might restart some slide and negative copying so something with a little more oomph for image editing could find a use and replace my now nearly 8 year old PC. Though I might well be stopped from looking before I found something to really grab my interest.
January 13, 2018 at 3:11 pm #15645I’m being driven that way (by the insecurity of my old Intel i7) into replacing it. Although it will definitely not be in the money no object mode my target will be high middle range, I’ll probably go for a Chillblast Ryzen7 and AMD graphics card desktop. The logic being to use a desktop as the gpu is the item most likely to get dated and require upgrading within 3+ years – expected system lifetime 5-7 years which will see me well into my dotage!
Not quite a wp+browsing box as I’m still into 3D graphics (I MUST make the effort to learn Blender!), programming, and the occasional roleplay/fps game. (I’m still fiddling with Elex which has hidden depths beneath a poorly constructed play balance)
January 13, 2018 at 6:08 pm #15657If i could justify it id get a another dell xps13. I had the xsp1330 back in the day and loved it, super powerful for the day, with discreet gpu it was a we monster, with one issue, sub 1h battery life. That’s how i ended up with a £1600 thinkpad x200t, with the super effiant su9400 (iirc) CPU, for its time no one was getting 8h of battery.
The major drawback to getting the think pad is the keyboard and nipple. Love them both. Nothing is like them. I don’t even thin the new ones are as good. Totally spoilt.
The new dell xps 13, just looks the business, and is around £1100 spec depending. Though i know I’ll know I’ll always want the TP keyboard, no matter how good, pretty or expensive the machine, ill never be 100% satisfied.
O know have a cheap referb thinkpad, it does all i need from a windows lappy, and had the keyboard.
So money no object would me getting dell to but a vintage TP keyboard in the new dell xps13.
Not interest it a gaming laptop, due to battery drain, learnt that lesson the expensive way, cost me about £1000, for a laptop that got about 3 months use as my primary lappy.
January 13, 2018 at 9:25 pm #15664I’m in the same boat as Dave. No need for a monster spec machine anymore. All my gaming is now done on my Asus C302C via Android, either in tablet mode or laptop mode.
TBH I’d be boring and put the money away towards my next car in about 3 years time, hopefully the incoming Suzuki Swift Sport with the 1.4 turbo engine might just be within my range as a 2 odd year old example.
January 14, 2018 at 8:54 am #15670im not a of the new ‘softer’ swift, hopefully the sport jazzes it up a bit, as i really like the outgoing swift sport 3 door. I think it’s a better and less common, thinking persons mini.
When i seen the new swift launch i was saddened, much like the new fiesta. Something about the fiesta, it seems to flip flop from good to bad looking, each cycle. It’s far from bad looking, i just think the out going I’m some of its sportier trims, preferably in 3 door, is brilliant (i dont like small cars with 5, even though i hate loving with a 3 door) though ford have a lot of work to do on their interiors and enfotainment systems, ford sync sucks.
The only ford car id put up their enfotainment is a first at 150/200, as id be buying it for its fun. Anything else they do would be a deal breaker. I like the kuga, but i just couldn’t. Toyota are in a similar place, though their Rav4 hydrid is awfully close to the top of my list, in the summer.
Also going to look into what motobility has to offer. Now wife has her badge. Start that search about easter.
January 14, 2018 at 11:22 am #15678Has she got through the whole mobility allowance process? Well done if she has, all I hearing about is people having it taken away.
January 14, 2018 at 11:33 am #15679Or aren’t entitled to the full allowance due to the change in rules from DLA to PIP. Under the DLA rules I’d get the full amount, PIP I get standard mobility.
January 14, 2018 at 11:40 am #15680Well, money was an object when I just upgraded, so I stuck with a Ryzen 5 (the 1600X) with a nVidia 1060 and I’m pretty happy so far. If money was no object, I’ve have probably gone down the Threadripper route, just for fun.

January 14, 2018 at 12:13 pm #15684@ricedg eventually yes, took her beat part of 3 years. She got it about a month or two after i got the current car.
I’ve not looked to see if motability is the best for us, but it will be looked into.
She got pip, it had changes from the old time she got accepted. Her issue was, to much wrong with her.
As she was under a handful of different consultants for different things, her application always lapsed before they all got back, due to hols, sickness, slowness etc.
Eventually one of the Macmillan ladies at the hospital sorted it our for her. It’s a good job she wasn’t reliant on it, as she would of been f#+ked. The system is broken, especially when you know of people on it, that trully don’t need it.
The only use I’ve found for the badge, is free tolls.other than that, we haven’t used it in two years. I drop her at whatever door, then drive to the safest most further corner of any car park. I don’t trust other drivers, and their doors, and hate people that abandon trollies.
The trolley ditchers rank higher than Isis on my hate radar. Id execute the f#+kers.
January 15, 2018 at 3:29 am #15702I hadn’t thought about mobile. I’d probably get a nvidia shield for trying out some mobile gaming, and a 10 inch device for books and comics. I’d also buy several chargers for each, and plug them in everywhere 😀
I’d put a decent server in the garage. Overkill for what I really need, but I’d get a proper roaming desktop set up for both of us. The number of times one of us has realised that the file we need is on another device is unbelievable. I know Google Drive etc. would probably do what we need, but the internet here is sluggish, and I’ve got 500GB of photos from my DSLR, nevermind the 100GB+ of music.
The blue badge and PIP are the bane of my life. I only ever go out if I’m feeling well enough, which is when I generally don’t need the badge, but if I don’t use it and it turns into a bad day, I’m screwed. The looks we get then when an apparently healthy me gets out of the car are enough to drive me mental. As far as PIP goes, I’ve caught myself not doing things that I can do on a good day, because the current feeling in the country is that I’d be reported as a fraud, and I get annoyed with myself. Where’s the crazy emoji when you need it? 😀
Never mind. Hospital appointment tomorrow, so a chance for some peace and quiet, and an hour or two playing SNES games on the phone
January 15, 2018 at 8:17 am #15707If money were no object I’d build a new house and install a PoE system to get rid of all the stupid wall warts that litter the house!
January 15, 2018 at 3:47 pm #15720I’m chuffed the Duchess got Motability Steve. I remember talking about it with you in MM days. Prices are a bit up and down atm thanks to Brexit and the £ going yo-yo, but whatever models you fancy on the site, pick several cars first and take your Doris around the showrooms, ask for a good (long) test drive. Take a close look and listen to the Motability Rep: some are there to get you to get one with a hefty deposit. I always look for comfort first, for something that suits both of us.
Back to Topic: if money was no object – a comfortable bungalow, all kitted out with adaptations for two gradually deteriorating Oldpharts. Nothing massive, just lawns, a ride-on mower and lots of roses, with a semi-detached gardener. ? Problem would come when SWMBO wanted one in town and I wanted one in this village. So I would buy a plot (got my eye on one if the Euro’s come up!) and have one built. Plot is about equidistant between Louth and my village and big enough for more housing, so I would build the kids one each. With a big workshop that son, SIL and self could escape to whenever we wished, mucking about with Stationary Engines. Heaven!
And a nice, 17″ lappy, as Ed says, POE everywhere.
Yer gotta ‘av a dream.

I'm out.January 23, 2018 at 2:21 am #16080Hospital appointment tomorrow, so a chance for some peace and quiet, and an hour or two playing SNES games on the phone
I took the phone control pad with me to the hospital and played a bit while I was waiting to be called in. When I finished and went to book my next appointment, one of the male nurses stopped me and asked about it. The receptionist noticed it then, and so did the couple waiting behind me. If I’d taken some with me, I could have sold them there and then, everybody loved the idea 😀
January 23, 2018 at 7:09 am #16081It is how some businesses start, though support and all the darned regulations that have to be met, including avoiding any licensing issues from pond life like ‘Associated Trotters in the Trough’ IP lawyers are all points to ponder.
