Mentioned it in the new years post I was cutting down the carbs to 30 a day or as near as damn it. Well I have been doing it since Tuesday. Come from 15 teas a day 3 sugars each, plus plenty of potatoes, bread and various other carb filled things I now feel like rubbish, well up and down anyhow. One thing very noticeable is my mood, the slightest of things get me so peed off, my blood pressure must go through the roof and not best of people to be around.
I have been dragging out some of my uncles old VHS tapes recorded from TV some 15 – 20 years ago, old westerns, war films etc which were old at the time of recording and these seem to have calming effect.
At the beginning of this low carb thingy I was 17.10 st considering I was 14 three years ago that’s very bad so I’ll see what happens in a month or so. Once I get the energy to do some walking I am sure it will fly off.

January 7, 2018 at 7:17 pm #15417Good luck to you. Stick with it.
January 8, 2018 at 12:02 am #15455Good luck. The first week or two is the hardest, as you’re essentially having withdrawals. You might want to wean yourself off the tea rather than going cold turkey, as caffeine can be a bugger for withdrawal.
January 8, 2018 at 7:33 am #15457I would worry less about the tea and more about the sugar. I stopped the sugar a long time ago but a pale tea, not too much skimmed milk has very little impact on weight but a great effect on how full you feel. The real impact for me is the frequent times when I feel put down by all that goes wrong on every front, so come the evening when I can all too easily swap the tea for something stronger, then the urge to snack can be the real killer. The Christmas period saw several pound slide back on, well six to be accurate. This was not festive eating and entertaining, but being limited on what I could do and having a number of challenges on various family fronts. The evenings became a disturbing depressing and painful time. with the impact on my resolve. Maybe the effort of pushing them back into their boxes will help me.
Changing you life style’s relationship with food is the key to weight management and usually this is the hardest battle. It takes weeks of resolve and is best seen as a process rather than a sudden step change. Stick with a well thought out plan, identify the challenges and try to work round them.
January 8, 2018 at 7:56 am #15458I think I give the wrong impression. I am not giving up on tea, just the sugar and milk. No tea is a step to far. A few beers after a long stressed out day though is missed dearly. I’ll keep on with it, I am sure my mind, soul and body will adjust in a couple of weeks.

January 8, 2018 at 8:33 am #15462I try to use skimmed milk 50/50 with water in my tea. I need a large volume of fluid to control other issues so use 400ml mugs of weak brew. Tea with breakfast probably sees me close to 1.5 litres already. Evenings are my nemesis. I avoided alcohol last night due to a possible conflict with tablets, but I nibbled more nuts than I wanted. I must do better tonight
January 8, 2018 at 10:08 am #15463Switch to Green Tea – much healthier and a VERY different flavour. You can even get a Yorkshire Green Tea and just to add before anyone sneers, you need a different tea mixture for the varying degrees of hard water around the country. It affects how much flavour/caffeine is extracted by the water.
If you do not like the taste of Green Tea try a ‘red’ tea such as Roobos (drink without milk).
January 8, 2018 at 10:23 am #15466I’m with Ed, been on green tea for a while, couldn’t go back to normal tea. Used to drink caffeine free tea straight, no milk or sugar ,but that was boring. Aldi green tea is superb, they even do flavoured ones sometimes, like jasmine, but they are to much for me.
January 8, 2018 at 10:27 am #15467Thanks, Actually I have been on green tea apart from my two first teas in the morning which is strong normal tea. I have a mixture of Mint Green, Apple and Cinnamon, Lemon and Ginger and A berry one I believe but with out sugar there not as good but I will persist with them as they taste much better than standard tea with out sugar.

January 8, 2018 at 10:40 am #15468The wife drinks “Ginger and Lemon” tea as a stabiliser, if she’s feeling a bit woozy with her Menieres. She also uses the Green tea with either lemon or peppermint if her digestion is playing up at all. In summer she drinks one of the Berry Fruit varieties.
If ever I’m a bit croaky I drink her ginger tea, but liberally laced with honey or and/or a bit of cheap brandy or scotch. Works wonders on a sore throat/tickly cough or cold-like symptoms.
Other than that I’ve always drunk tea ( made strong ) with milk ( double portion ) so that it looks weak, but tastes strong, if that makes sense. Never been a coffee lover, except for the odd weak latte/cappuccino.
The nicest Green Tea I ever drank was in Thailand, they sold it bottled like a juice. That and fresh coconut water were worth the journey alone – so refreshing!!
Edit – Lee – try some with a squirt of runny honey!! It adds more flavour with only a few calories.
January 8, 2018 at 12:50 pm #15470Those flavoured brews of different types are very much a personal taste thing. I have been pressured to try, but my tastes have not shifted at all. There is a tiny case to be made for some fruit flavour drinks, but the rest are less attractive than tap water for me. I stressed the ‘for me’ because I totally accept that tastes are a very personal issue.
My daughter has decided to go vegan so another nightmare. The results are an increasing flow of dishes, ‘slop’ I am happy to decline. For me they trade the flavours of the main ingredients for some unpleasant ‘seasoning’. I would prefer raw vegetables, (where practical – not with such as potatoes) to those prepared concoctions. It causes some strains…
January 8, 2018 at 1:08 pm #15471I am curious to what fellow forumites opinions are on these two questions.
1. How accurate are these pedometer apps for android. I installed one called pedometer step meter this morning and was just curious
2. This is an “How long is a piece of string question” what do you consider a daily healthy walking distance is?

January 8, 2018 at 2:09 pm #15472I cannot answer the first but the accepted target for the second is a 10000 minimum number of paces over an entire day. Not really that much as it is only about 4-5 miles, and it is based on little scientific data. Its in the same category as 5/day. A good but fairly meaningless target. Exercise has been shown to have a lot of beneficial aspects with latest research showing it changes the makeup of the bugs in the gut which may have larger long-term health benefits.
I’d be more worried about you going TT, it is a scientific fact based on a lot of evidence that moderate drinkers have a lower death rate than people who are TT. In fact one small glass of red wine/day has been scientifically shown to reverse type 2 diabetes in 80% of the population. The Government and medical profession hate publicising this data in case the population think that more is better!
January 8, 2018 at 8:51 pm #15481Lee, tomorrow my Gert is in for a new hip and I am so concerned that I made her the evening meal of her choice. ?? Turned out to be a fried egg on top of each half of a buttered muffin. Now I couldn’t let her eat alone, ?? so I had the same. It’s a long time since we had fried eggs at home and we really appreciated it.
Just a thought… Well, we had strong Ty Phoo with milk but no sugar, got to make sacrifices somewhere. And no biscuits afterwards, proper martyrs.
I cannot take alcohol, had to give up a regular drink due to internal issues after a diseased gall bladder a couple of years ago infected my liver. I can have the very occasional glass of white wine, so I pad it out by having a Spritzer. I look forward to family “do’s” and suggest them constantly.

Thanks Steve. Op was at 9 am, I was up at 5:15 this morning to get her there for 7:30. Just phoned hospital and she is said to be doing really well. Knowing my Gert with anaesthetics and strong pain killers, that means she is cooperating because she will be semi conscious for most of the day.

I'm out.January 9, 2018 at 4:17 pm #15500Those early morning starts can be a challenge, at least it appears that the weather did not get in the way as it might well have done. I am guessing it was a journey rather than just round the corner to get to the hospital and in the dark misty drizzly early morning that can be tough. It sounds as though you spend a great deal of time in the car for one reason or another so this is one day that all the practice paid off for you. Take care and keep your spirits up, I really hope that the procedure results in the pain relief that was sought.

Hi
The pedometers are all inaccurate. However, they are consistent. Whatever your pedometer reports, use that as a baseline for improvement. Improvement is improvement 🙂

January 14, 2018 at 4:58 pm #15693I have an old click clack step counter that is attached on my belt. I have used it on and off for 40 plus years though it clocks out the distance in miles not steps, for that you have to back calculate. I very between less than a mile up to about 5 miles about 10,000 steps on a really active day, though I am not sure it really makes a hill of beans difference to me. It tends to be the other way round when problems grind me down I do less, when everything is going well I do more, achieve more, eat less and drink less. The last few weeks have not been so good one way and another, even though daughter has finally resumed volunteering at the food bank for six hours per week so it should be positive. Unfortunately, most of the time it has been like living with over age explosives of dubious stability, wondering when it will all explode again. She had a four or five month hiatus from summer onwards that was not pretty and my wife’s health issues only added to the difficulties.
