I had six attempts to post yesterday, but there was a problem with the forum – the error message being that I could not post a blank reply!

I have started a new topic to try and get around the issue:

I have no personal experience, but check out DLinks poor security and patch record.

You may need to root and replace their software with a far more secure FOS setup – I think this is a situation where you get more troubles than happiness from buying cheap.

I’m going to try with a USB enclosure plugged into the router. A USB pen drive is working, so next test is the 1TB drive. I have an enclosure in my bag of crap, if it still works. Downside, I need a new multiplug. Only one socket in the hallway where the router is, and the router is plugged into that. I could work around temporarily with a dual socket extension cable, but the final plan is the router, the drive and the Pi (wired to the router, rather than WiFi) together. So shopping after testing, I think, for a 4 socket cable.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

Just to emphasise the Pi3 is picky about getting enough power. If you have a good 2.5amp power supply for the Pi, according to this thread you can run a spinner in an enclosure without a powered hub, apparently the key is to use quality 1 foot (or less) usb cabling for the hdd power lead. (I have obviously been lucky with my choice of powered hubs!)

Ed I don’t think the HDD will be hanging off the pi – it will be hanging off the router – and if its a 3.5″ drive it will have its own PSU in any case (ref the shortage of mains sockets).

Well, it’s academic at the moment. Th enclosure is dead. Relegated from bag of crap to the bin.

I may just shell out on a 3TB NAS including drives and have done with it.

Not to mention, my heart won’t take those scary moments after you’ve performed open heart surgery on your best rig and then it won’t boot until you fiddle a bit more for half an hour for much longer. The drive is back in it’s home, and that’s where it’s staying.

Dan, unless you want things to look pretty an enclosure is not needed. Strip out the hdd and buy one of these.

I have the DS216j with 2 x Toshiba P300 3TB 7,200rpm drives. The dual core ARM CPU is the sweet spot for F&P services, indeed anything bar transcoding on the fly. I back it up daily to a mobile USB3 drive and the PCs use it as a target for their local backup software (mostly EaseUS). Lee uses it as a target for some of his Forumite backups.

I use Cloudstation to synchronize files between the Synology and my business computers / laptops and I support several small businesses doing the same thing. Before I moved my business email to an exchange server I used CardDAV to do the same thing with calendars. I use Photo Station for sharing picture albums with family and friends.

Following lots of mucking about with TalkTalk routers I moved the DHCP server duties to the Synology and even though I have now moved to a Draytek I’ve left DHCP there. I have also setup a PPTP VPN and tested it pre Draytek. However Cloud Station does all I currently need in the way of remote access so I’ve not reinstated it.

It can handle up to 150 FPS @ 1080p of IP cameras, but after two you need to buy licences. The Survellance Station software is very good.

There are mobile apps to access just about everything. The key easy access from the internet is to set up Quick Connect.

Dan’s NAS question was appropriate for all the wrong reasons! Apparently Dlink weirdly shares the same opprobrium with any WD MyCloud NAS, all have or had a hard-wired backdoor with the same access path just ready to exploit..

The backdoor, detailed in the ElReg report, lets anyone log in as user mydlinkBRionyg with the password abc12345cba.

If you use MyCloud you should check if you are vulnerable, if so look for a firmware update.

If I’m going to shell out for a populated NAS, I may as well look at the Synology devices. Seem much better respected.

As a slight aside, if you get a case for a Pi, remove the SDCard before mounting it. I managed to break one 🙁

Fortunately, it wasn’t the new one, and must have been lying around doing nothing for a reason, so I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

As mentioned SD Cards in Pi service are very fragile. A software shutdown and electrical disconnection should be done before even removing a card. I suspect the frafility has something to do with Linux write-behind mode coupled with the usual housekeeping required to perform a normal  Linux shutdown.

No, this was more ham-fistedness, as in I physically broke it. I forgot it was there, and it caught on the lip above the access hole in the case and snapped. Fortunately, it broke the card and not the socket. ?

As an update, I popped into CeX today, and they have a verbatim 500Gb USB drive for sale for just £40, so I figured I’d give it a go. The original plan was to connect to the router, but I’ve also had a couple of beers and it didn’t work immediately, so plan B was to plug it into the Pi directly, which seems to be working. Currently migrating my music and video to it, so I guess I’ll see when I reconfigure Plex how well it will work.
