Like the title says, one of my email accounts been deactivated due to inactivity. I had a couple of email accounts with GMX when they first started because I could get “my first name”@gmx.com and .co.uk. But now one has been deactivated. Which I thought was a bit strange. I only had one game account associated with it and now I can’t reset the password so that game account is lost. But not the end of the world. Although I imagine such deactivation could potentially be a lot more troublesome to somebody under a different scenario. Just thought I’d let you guys know. I had a Yahoo email inactive for over a decade and had no problems logging. I find it strange that they would do such a thing. Especially when it was regularly accessed through the mail collector from the other GMX account. I thought they were for life not just for Xmas 😀
December 31, 2017 at 11:38 am #14995I had 2 accounts with AOL which were deleted without warning ‘due to inactivity of more than 90 days’. If they had given me advance warning (on my main account) I could have retrieved the old emails but now they are lost and gone forever. Very annoying and a black mark for AOL!
December 31, 2017 at 11:52 am #14997I got a handfull of gmx accounts for the same reasons. I got all my kids good ones, but never gave them them ,thinking that once older a decent serious email would be useful . sadly through inactivity, most are now gone.
December 31, 2017 at 4:24 pm #15054Exactly why I have my own server. As an added bonus, I can create my own throwaway address if required.
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
December 31, 2017 at 6:27 pm #15060Long way from the same thing, but not dissimilar: my landlord Waterloo Housing Group, is one of the biggest Social Housing providers in the UK and has the absolute worst, clunkiest website you could possibly experience, with the most IT- illiterate idiots supposedly running it.
http://www.waterloo.org.uk/ – can’t supply the Resident’s page, for obvious reasons, but it is a Secure site.
I had not accessed the site for a few weeks, then attempted to do so. They threw me out as “Password Not Recognised”. I knew it was OK, checked back and found it in Firefox ‘Saved Logins’. Sure enough, I had the right one. Phoned, passed around the usual several Options, reported my complaint and was told to expect a call back. That came 4 days later and I was told by some supercilious pillock that they removed passwords of users who did not access the site for a period of 28 days “For security purposes.” I informed them that real websites with real Security procedures did not have to do that: I have accessed some more than 2 years after last time and had no problems. Did they not comprehend the significance of the “s” in the “https://” part of their site address?
It’s just another facet of a really krap organisation. Trying to report a Repair problem would be comic, if it wasn’t so stupid. I asked permission online on November 8th to make my rear garden low maintenance by making certain changes. They said allow 5 working days, then lost the message. I have asked again twice and received the same “5 working days” message. I give up and will just go ahead with it in 2018.

December 31, 2017 at 9:20 pm #15066It’s no trouble to send yourself an email (now and again) and reply then it’s active.
That’s what I do.
I expected AOL to de activate when I left, I don’t use it, 5 years on it’s still active.
Cheers

They are on their Christmas Break Chris. Started a week ago, back who knows?
They have decided to become a Charitable Trust sometime in the next year. Just when I thought things could not get worse…

I bet the work experience lad turned the server off thinking it was the lights, on his way out Xmas eve.

This made me chuckle
January 2, 2018 at 11:24 am #15128I also found out that my two gmx accounts had been de-activated.. Tried to reactivate but not possible. Then tried to open a new account with the same name but it says the name is currently in use. Then tried to send an email to that account and it was undelivered as the inbox does not exist. Looked at their terms and it does say that any email address can not be re-allocated so that is that I suppose. Can’t be bothered to think up another alias so just deleted all records from my computer.
