Christmas eve one of my POE IP cams stopped functioning so remove an existing easily accessible cam as a replacement, out with the ladder & swap them over.
Back down the ladder & test. No good.
Swap the ethernet cable to another POE port. Still dead.
Find cable tester, back up the ladder. Cable tests good.
Diagnosis : camera ok, ports ok so must be the cable. Luckily have a spare 5m cable in the spares box.
Yesterday (before the rain & snow), replaced the cable which required accessing gable end from inside the attic & outside from the ladder.
Camera working again.Laid out & inspected the old cable & found one section where the internal wires showed as twists on the outer.
Retested cable, all ok. Put some tension on the cable & got a fleeting reading of two wires showing at once.
The camera or cameras (there have been several), have worked fautlessly over the years. Presumably I had either stretched or created a knot in the cable during the initial install but the damage wasn’t sufficient to create a fault.--

December 28, 2017 at 7:48 am #14837Glad you sorted it out ok. I have to be very careful with external cables and making sure they are ‘trunked’ as the bleeding grey tree rats commonly known as squirrels love to nibble on all exposed cables.
December 28, 2017 at 1:48 pm #14847It’s amazingly easy to damage Ethernet cable and still have it pass a basic tester.
December 29, 2017 at 1:02 am #14873There seem to be enough cats about to keep the squirrels at bay – or at least I have only ever seen one in over 30 years.
Luckily the only external cable is about 100mm between the wall & the camera.
I used a piece of 19mm overflow pipe as conduit through the wall. Cheap & just the right size for an ethernet plug. If you do them one at a time you can get three through. A quick squirt of expanding foam seals the conduit.
