Forumite Points: 0So I’m sorting through paper work. Bank statements, pay slips, insurance documents, etc etc.
Rather than keep the hard copies, I’d like to scan them in to keep digitally, meaning I’ll have better access to them and be able to get rid of the paper.
Currently, I only have a standard flatbed scanner, which takes space and is cumbersome to scan a lot of documents. I don’t know what the correct term is, but I thought of looking for a scanner I used to use at a work place.
You would feed in paper at the top, it would scan both sides at the same time. Because of this I can just feed in multiple sheets in in one go. I searched “feed through scanner” on ebay but that only gave results for about £70+.
Any suggestions?
December 27, 2017 at 12:22 am #14726Hi FS – The term you are looking for is ‘auto sheet feeder’ and many of the Epson Workforce printers have this as well as duplex scanning – though only one side at a time and then pulled back in to do the other side. I have a WF-2750 unit – it can also do duplex printing and pretty fast as well but it’s £100 – slightly over your budget. However it can also take a CISS unit.
I also have a Canon MX7600 3/1 unit which is very good indeed – they used to be available on Ebay.

Same here, it’s so easy.

December 28, 2017 at 11:57 am #14839I use the Canon P-208 for exactly what you’re describing. It’s here at Amazon. It’s gone up since I bought it but it does duplex scans in one. Only downside, the included software doesn’t work on Linux. Prior to that, I had a Doxie.
wasbit – I think Duke is referring something similar to ScannerPro (I assume he’s on about an Android app rather than iOS one mind 😉 ) Basically take a picture of the parcel. I have ScannerPro, but I don’t recall ever really using it. Might give it a go. However, I tend to leave scanning until a few items to scan, and then the Canon really is pretty quick due to the duplex scanning.

December 28, 2017 at 11:58 am #14840Install a pdf/doc scanning type app, like office lens, from Microsoft on your phone.
Point phone at a document takes a photo from within the app.
You don’t need a dedicated app, you could use the camera app but then you’d have jpegs etc .. Instead of a dot pdf.
Even if you have a lower end phone with a poorer camera, it will still make an excellent scanner, just make sure the room/document is decently lit. Even the cheapest phones are 8mp, so will make a good shooter of docs and receipts.
I’ve seen someone once, set up their phone on a homemade a tripod, facing down, so you can switch in out docs and scan real fast. Probably worth it if you’re scanning a big backlog.
The good thing about office lens is it cute off all the leftover space, and make a “quick and clean” copy all in focus and in the frame.
It’s a good app. I don’t think I’ve used my current scanner (on my printer ) since I got it. Which would be over a year.

Forumite Points: 0Thanks all, it looks like Office Lens is the way I’ll be going!
I like that scanner unit Drehza, but it’s a lot more than I was thinking. After splashing out on a new router (ASUS AC68U) and looking at Zen 2 coming as my long overdue upgrade, I think I’ll have to settle for the phone app method 🙂
December 28, 2017 at 8:12 pm #14862Nice router have the 66U variant , and its way more router than I need. But I like you can put different os on etc. Also super easy to use the software that it comes with, unlike any other router I’ve used.
December 28, 2017 at 8:46 pm #14863Yeah, I think it was cheaper when I got it (about £75 IIRC). I find it better than the app ones (downloaded the ScannerPro app again and gave it a go, but the results weren’t great). For now, I’m happy with it. When it breaks, I’ll see what my options are then. However, I run a “paperless” house – everything that gets sent to me is scanned if I need to keep it. However, I often keep the paper copy until the box I’ve got is full, then I empty the other box I have with paper and alternate like that. Partly because you still need paper copies of some items for ID etc.

December 29, 2017 at 12:49 am #14872Ok, got it. Thought it was a dreaded predictive text error & couldn’t make out what it should have read.

That’s my one worry about doing this, I’m not sure what I definitely must keep.
December 29, 2017 at 4:49 pm #14917So far, I’ve been relatively OK. Anyone that offers downloads of data is usually fine for not keeping. I’ve kept all the mortgage stuff and insurance if it’s not electronic but other than that, I think I’m getting to the point where it would be easier just to shred it.

December 30, 2017 at 8:43 am #14941The stupidly antique systems of Banks etc often require a proof of identity your current address and stipulate a current utility bill! I have found that when they are challenged they will happily accept your current driver license or perhaps your passport (for non-drivers). Ideally you need something with your signature as this antique country has not evolved to reach the target of an Estonian system. link
That said given this country’s track record for Government IT projects, maybe we are a long way away from such heights!
