Son arrives tomorrow for a short stay and needs a ride to Stansted Airport early Wednesday morning, he’s off to the Canaries for five days.
It seems the rail service ( here certainly ) over the holiday is abysmal or missing. No service into London from either Margate, Ramsgate or Ashford on Boxing Day!!

JohnDecember 25, 2017 at 5:00 am #14683Happy Christmas to all forumites. It’s not been a bad year in regards to forumite, not to much teething trouble and no doubt some good times ahead. Many of you of you have thanked me for forumite but it goes without saying I owe you lot a big thank you for being part of forumite as there would not be much point of it with you! I have some good plans going forward but more about that in the new year.
I am sat on my bed getting ready to put the christmas dinner and set the cats new toys up I got them for christmas. Then at 9am I will watch scrooge – A christmas Carol “Its Tradition”.
No hang over this morning as I just did not fancy the booze last night but there is two bottles of Baileys waiting.

December 25, 2017 at 8:17 am #14686Happy Xmas all. Just woke, the house is still quiet. I don’t think I’ll spoil that just yet.
I’m dying for a pee, but as soon as i open the bedroom door, the dogs will sure wake, which in turns wakes the house.
Im just gonna lie here until i hear a kid move. Until then I’m just gonna lie here busting.
An early Xmas has never been a thing in our house. Give the kids seem to have my sleep pattern, well mine as a kid, can’t get sleep, so can’t wake. My issue is by 18 is forgot about the liking of the lie in part of that setup. I just get to sleep late and wake up not long after. Though last night i was asleep for two. So had decent sleep.
The neighbours just got up, can one smoking out the back.
Also my dental work 10 days ago no is a blown abscess, which the blames me for. Saying i still have to visit her mum for dinner. Between us, I’ll show my face, then retire home. I’m yet to break this news.
I’ll wait till after the give giving.

December 25, 2017 at 1:19 pm #14693Hope it’s all going well for everyone, I’m just getting started on some beers so it’s getting better.

Dave, I can see the allure of the Belgian beers!
December 25, 2017 at 3:35 pm #14694Merry Christmas to all and i do mean merry !
Cant share the enthusiasm for Belgian beer though. Last time I was in Brussels all I could get on tap was stella or Maes and it was universally horrid.
December 25, 2017 at 10:17 pm #14697Merry Christmas everybody ?
Here’s hoping you got what you wanted, and not what you deserve ??
December 26, 2017 at 7:04 pm #14713WoF, you should have gone to Brugge/Bruges* That’s more of a Flemish area and less French. The beers are great there, but not in the centre, which is expensive. Find Katelijnestraat further out and the “Bier Palais”- big choice of beers and really good restaurants around as well. Knokke is also good, but more expensive. That’s the cleanest, tidiest resort I have ever seen. Brugge has good memories for SWMBO and I, we took a canal boat tour and made some Flemish Belgian friends that we still contact today.
*Brugge is what the Flemish inhabitants call it, they speak Belgian Dutch. Bruges is what the French-speaking Walloons call it. They all seem to speak each other’s language anyway and most speak very good English. After too may beers in the Bier Palais, I spoke fluent gibberish.?
Yesterday and today, to son’s and daughter’s houses to survey various pressies and results. Last saw my son late today, finishing fitting the DAB+ radio we bought him to his Combi Van. This afternoon SWMBO and I were at Sutton-on-Sea beach, wrapped in several layers against the biting wind and looking like MR and Mrs Michelin. ? It was very cold, but we enjoyed it. Sun was shining and the air was very clear. There is a huge extension to the local wind farm, way out in the Wash and north into the North Sea proper. The horizon was so clear, it was the first time we could make it out.
Gdaughter loves her Wileyfox Swift 2 Plus. Last seen before goodbyes, playing herself at some new game between phone and Laptop.

I'm out.December 26, 2017 at 8:17 pm #14717When in Belgium don’t worry about beer on tap, that’s a very British thing. That’s probably why you could only find the local piss water.
Beer comes in bottles and has to be served in the correct glass and it comes in 33ml servings, not pints. Probably just as well as it’s all 8 or 9 percent. You can get Duvel or Leffe anywhere and everywhere, even Tescos.
Bruges, if you’re coming from the coast keep on going to Ghent (if you’re coming from Brussels it’s the stop before). The centre is very much like Bruges but it’s nowhere near the tourist rip off prices. It also has a proper tram system to get to and from the station (the pretty bit in the centre is all walkable).
On the coast, Blankenberge is more of your jolly seaside town, it also has Belgium’s only pier. The little cafe in the square outside the station (it’s the stop after Bruges and on the coastal tram route) is a great place to while away the time waiting for the train with the locals. Antwerp is just wonderful, we spend a lot of time in Leuven.
Brussels is probably the worst place to get the experience of Belgium, like London is not representative of Britain. Land at Zavantem and get the train to anywhere else ? Leuven is less than 20 minutes away and there are over 40 trains a day on that route. Leuven’s on the main train line to anywhere in the country so get a 10 journey card for E70 you can also share with others and use that as a base.
