If your GP has told you to take Statins you may wish to review this article. Beware, some serious biochemistry lurks inside the full text of the article. Please do not stop taking Statins, but if you suffer from the well known side effects (muscle weakness, or lose of feeling in fingers/toes, or memory issues), then you may want to draw the link to your GP’s attention. (I’ll take bets that they have not read it).

Seneff is a bit of a crusader against Statins and Monsanto’s RoundUp in particular. In fact some of her YouTubes are almost a rant, which actually detracts somewhat from a scientific study that fits a lot of very different observations and offers an erstwhile rationale for the underlying cause of a lot of heart disease. Applying Occam’s Razor in which one simple explanation is better than lots of linked dependencies supports a lot more study for this theory.

I personally found it as interesting as I had a lot of side-effect problems with statins, and stopped taking them as a result. The nerve sheath side effects quickly disappeared but I’m less sure that it was a good cardiac decision!

My GP advised me to take statins when I reached 70, almost 3 years ago, and began to get occasional dizzy spells. He sent me for a programme of tests and recommended Statins, but also gave me a printout of his own devising, regarding side-effects, and told me to contact him immediately if I experienced any.  He has done quite a lot for me including standing up to one of my consultants and insisting upon certain actions being carried out correctly. I can have a good conversation with him, in layman’s terms, and he takes time to tell me the truth. So I began with Atorvastatin and gave it 2 months, whereupon I did have side effects, including sickness, diarrhoea and increased dizzy spells. I told my GP and he moved me to Pravastatin. Within a month the side effects cleared up and I began to actually feel better.

After another appointment to discuss results, he turned to me with a wry grin and said “Of course it suits you better than Atorvastin: it’s more expensive. I have learned that you are, medically speaking, high maintenance!” A good GP with a good sense of humour. Bonus.

I have been taking statins since 2008, I have never noticed any of the above side affects. That’s not to say they aren’t lurking and could pop out one day.

          Cheers

I stopped them in somewhere about 2009, walking became too painful, though other issues came along later to upset my apple cart. If statins would have done much for me, it would have been to make me feel I was living longer, rather than achieving any good result result. No one suggests I did the wrong thing or demanded any new tests.

I did read a bit of ED’s linked reference, but time and physical reading issues worked against me. Perhaps I am wrong but diet and metabolic aspects appear to intertwine very heavily to affect one’s outcomes.

I still working on reducing my weight, (>10% so far), though if I eat much more fruit and vegetable will I fly like a fruit bat or graze like a herbivore?

Every time I go to see the consultant (for diabetes) he tries to get me on them. Up to now, I’ve resisted. The diabetes pump forums were full of horror stories about them a few years ago.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Richard, being slightly plump is good as slightly plump people have a greater life expectancy than those at the lower end of the bmi band.

Dan, you could try them as I did: for 2 months, keeping an eye on what happens (I kept a Diary). I got the side effects I mention, GP changed the Statin scrip and I was OK. In fact the occasional dizziness I had before taking any Statins is long gone. I forgot to mention also, that having to get up for a wee in the night, is also gone, and I do feel better than I was feeling before I took Statins.

? I hasten to add that I do not have a bladder movement in the night, either! ??

Trump said in one interview once, that he doesn’t exercise as he believes that your body only had so much energy and using it up on exercise shortens your life.

He may actully know something we don’t.

Your body only has so much energy ?

Why you have to top it up regularly by eating then?

                          What an idiot.

Clearly Trump uses all of his energy spouting, shouting and raving leaving none for his brain to function on. He is no guru, but his passing would be no loss, except to the junk food industry as his the junk food diet is clearly not helping him.

Lest it be thought that I am seeking to look like Twiggy’s thinner brother, I have a long long way to go before I am anything like that!  My approximately 12% loss only takes me into the upper middle range of overweight and has taken 189 days; albeit with several periods of stress induced back sliding. My fair (foul?) weather friends Mr and Mrs Merlot and their side kick Chardonnay (and others) together with their associates The Easy Munchies have something to answer for.

Though mobility and to some extent flexibility are better, I still having problems moving which given some stability problems from joint and back issues becomes a potent mixture. I am never likely to get into the NHS preferred weight range, which would need about the same amount of weight loss again, plus a further 4KG .- That is not look in danger of happening in this lifetime – though the wardrobe still contains clothes from that time in my life. Still I aim to press on slowly – an average 60gms loss a day is hardly rushing things. So maybe in 233 days time I will have something to show for trying to become more of a mouth control freak, – no holding of breath please.

A daily graph as shown the impact of this years life disturbances with several periods of several months when events just rolled over the top of me. If anything was undesirable from a health point of view it was those periods when I was swept up in a bubble of uncontrolled problems. While I cannot control this month’s pick of the crop, at least I have a few issues that I have been able to direct and own. Though the failure of a 12 month old car battery this morning could not be controlled, at least the event has been recovered via a helpful garage – they do exist.

Sort of related to the OP. Vitamin D supplementation is getting increasing attention from the medical profession. It now appears that they have been working with the wrong assumptions for years! link

Takes me back to the old nursing school intake 101; half of what you learn over the next few years will be proven wrong in the coming years…..

                                          Or words to that effect.

Just like what your meant to eat/avoid during pregnancy, seems to back and forth evey year. Or it was back when I was young and me and her use to partake in such activities. Lol

Vitamin D during pregnancy is also getting far more attention. Too little D and too little sunlight (e.g. burqa wearers) is now thought to be very closely linked with a much higher risk of MS in later life.
