Well I have a spare few minutes so I thought I would keep you guys in the loop. I have mentioned a couple of times I will be re-designing things here. At the moment the site is a pain to maintain and generally look after and there is still lot’s of niggling problems. I also want to early in the new year start promoting and putting the word out there that the site is here but as it is, it is not in a fit state.

So my idea is a re-build from the ground up. It will give me something to do over Christmas as it did the last one. I am aiming to get all my real work done over the next couple of week giving me a good month to focus on this and one other project of mine.

So the LOOK of the new site! Well I am going for a mix of clean, modern but different but most of all simple!

I am going to create a page here were you can visit and see images of the build and some explanations of what I am doing and why.

I am also going to be going over past request and re-think them and see what I can fit in now I’ll have more wiggle room.

At the moment no colours or fonts have been decided but I am currently open to suggestions on the font’s “Colours can wait”! Browse google fonts if you have any ideas. Google fonts here!

There is very little to see at the moment as I have been doing things in any spare hour I have had free at night but you can take a look at a couple of images below.

Could I please ask that text and background colours are such that there is no difficulty in reading the text – text like “Forum Index, Latest Replies etc.” with a blue background is ideal imho. In other words please ensure sufficient contrast.

Also is it possible to make finding / replying to messages any easier? For all of the faults of the old MM site, sending PMs was simple – I’m struggling here.

Otherwise I think it’s very good indeed and thank you for all of your hard work over the past 12 months or so.

Yes the message system was already on my mind. I may as well “Now you have brought it up” say that a new message system will be put in place however at the moment I am not sure if I can carry over any current messages.

I have over the past couple of days been contemplating on the new redesign. I was planning, back in November for the new look to be ready for new years day or forumites birthday. This is in no way going to happen. Just simply not enough time. However I am wanting to move some features over from the new build to here and to try and clean this place up a little. Think XP, Then Longhorn, Then vista.

Weare on XP at the moment, I have been working on Longhorn but time is getting on and I want to get some new stuff out but some stuff will have to be dropped so vista will just have to do. ? And no, before you even say it or think it! Yes, you know what I mean.

I will be over the next few days shutting it down at random to get on with thing’s. I will not have the time in the new year and I do don’t have the resources to duplicate it and work elsewhere. It’s quiet around here over this period so may as well get done what I can.

I will be naming the “The interim build to” Cassie ☺️.

Expect some odd and wonderful changes, WindowsFS for example?

Holy crap – I thought the page had been hijacked at first. However, it is faster and cleaner, so good job.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

A million miles off so far I’m afraid. I have left the site open and working around forumites. Some note to keep in mind that may help avoid some obstacles. The main menu is getting the drop downs back as a new mobile menu fixes it’s old issues and you will be able to find everything in the Main menu. The new login/log out works for login but seems to hang for log out, for now you can refresh the page. And yes I am trying to make it so you stop on the same page when you log in.

Further notes. I am going for a darker, posher look ! 🙂

I’m having trouble getting to the forum at the moment, it’s been going on for at least a few hours, but I got distracted when I first tried to log in and can’t remember what time that was.

I’m currently posting ok from Edge, but having trouble with Chrome and Firefox on the desktop. Chrome on Android seems to be ok, but I haven’t tried posting yet. Everything’s up to date on my end.

Chrome is letting me log in, but keeps taking me back to the main site page https://forumite.co.uk/ no matter what I try to do. Firefox gives me a Secure Connection Failed error on https://forumite.co.uk/ and https://forumite.co.uk/forums as seen in the screenshot below

EDIT: As I’ve been typing, Chrome seems to have fixed itself.

EDIT 2: Not quite. The top banner is covering some of the text, and the names and icons are missing from the recently posted list

A minor critique on ‘style’. I find the dense black bars that separate the posts draws my eyes too much. Good to have an obvious separator, but it may look better in a less dense colour (dark grey, dark navy or stippled?). On the opposite tack the light green on green ‘search here’ text is almost invisible to my eyes. Forum Index is a little better but not much – white text might be better.

Still being redirected to the Forumite advert when logging in and when selecting a topic. It does not do this if I use the back arrow to return to the topic.

Understand that there are teething troubles so this is just for info not a complaint.

I like it, did not think it was capable of improvement but I find the black bars/white text a better, clearer combination. On the desktop and the 8″ Hudl it’s fine but I haven’t tried it on the 5″ Wileyfox phone yet. The drop-down from Forums tab is good and the black background/white text combo works well with that.

EDIT: forgot to mention that it works well on Firefox with desktop and Hudl.

All in all, for me an evolutionary improvement. Keep on truckin’ Lee.?

It’s looking better. I am just going with what pops in there for now but it’s safe to say it will look different in two days. I know there issues but they will be ironed out. And I am sure not everybody will like the changes but I will eventually break them down and brain wash them in to my way of thinking ??

What do people think about using the mobile menu on the desktop? So rather than the main menu now just the slide in menu?

The menu is fine, but I’d like a ‘recent posts’ button somewhere. As I’ve found it quicker to hit back then refesh the recent page. Than opening the side menu, then opening the drop down , then finally hitting ‘recent posta’

I do like the menu , and I really like the colour set up atm, just the buttons most used often need to be closer than 3 clicks away .

I know a real 1st world issue lol.

Maybe it’s just how I use the forum. Maybe you should poll the membership to see what buttons they most use. Pick out a place for say 3 buttons , and put the top 3 buttons in them slots.

Are you keeping the black and white theme? It looks slick. Talking of slick, have you moved server or something ? It feels quicker.

I am working on the buttons but there is a fault some were that I am trying to fix hence why there is no buttons on the desktop view at the right. As for speed it is a bit quicker and lighter as I has I have been cleaning up unnecessary crap from loading. I am keeping the colours “Dark blue, not black ;)” and the logo is stopping after 1 years worth of thinking, so its final :).
