I cannot help but see the Harry-Meghan betrothal as a Distraction Event. Explanation of my Republican thoughts:

1. Harry has been having a great time of it, enjoying himself all over the world with anything female.

2. The Boss, Family and British Establishment have been viewing his antics with a jaundiced eye and decided to lay down the law and rein him in.

3. The B, F & BE have decided upon an injection of ‘Diversity & Equality’ into the Royal ranks. What could be more ‘diverse’ than a mixed-race, Catholic American bride for the bachelor Prince? (apologies to Catholics and mixed-race Americans who are not joining the British Royal Firm))

4. The government are making an incompetent dog’s dinner of the Brexit mess. Cabinet is split, ruling Party is divided and so is the country.

5. There are many problems in the economy facing the country and we have a weak PM who simply does not know what to do from one day to the next.

6. We look like paying at least £40 billion to get a half-reasonable release from the EU.

7. So let’s have a Royal Wedding! The media will be full of this pair of over-Thirties as if they were teenagers, until the wedding day.

8. If public interest cools, let’s see if they can produce a sprog. That should make for another distraction for the Unwashed!

I am considering forming a Cynical British Republican Party. Send your joining application on the back of a £20 note…

I never had you down as a conspiracy theorist Bob. Try Occam’s razor (I got this from the Simpsons of all places).

Occam’s razor (or Ockham’s razor) is a principle from philosophy. Suppose there exist two explanations for an occurrence. In this case the simpler one is usually better. Another way of saying it is that the more assumptions you have to make, the more unlikely an explanation is. Occam’s razor applies especially in the philosophy of science, but also more generally.

What’s wrong with boy meets girl and nature takes it’s course?

And one your second point, since when has any Grandparent not turned a blind eye to things like your first point?

Your third point sounds like the sort of thing the elder generation of my Cornish family bring up, along with everyone else of their generation in the pub. Along with points 4, 5 & 6 would be the EU’s fault and proof, if it were needed, that we should get out right now and Newlyn will get it’s fish back.

I loved all the hysteria about the wedding costing the country a fortune (despite the net effect of how many tourist $ it will bring in). Now they’re paying for it all I can’t wait to see the next set of objections.

I did laugh when the news said that as St Georges “chapel” only seats 800 it would be a more intimate atmosphere than Westminster Abbey.

This my idea of a chapel (London Apprentice near St Austell).

EDIT Just seen that it’s now been converted into a holiday home and is advertised as near Mevagissey. My arse it is. It’s just up from Charlestown where they film all the sailing ship dock scenes from The Onedin Line to Poldark and Doctor Who (and where I went mackerel fishing on the harbour wall every night on holiday as a kid).

May I beg to differ on a small point? I am not disputing the use of Charleston in the Odenin line but I think that some of the quay scenes were filmed in Exeter docks (as they were then) and not as they are now.

Charleston is still worth a visit as an interesting location, or it was when the children were smaller than now, say about 20 years back,. Hopefully not too much has changed there to remove the historic interest from the docks and the ship loading apparatus they had developed to simplify their task.

The Dartmouth Arms pub in Dartmouth has been used for a lot of period British Navy stuff. Stills from the shooting of the Onedin line et al including a Carry On cover its walls. It is now a relatively quiet tourist pub that serves a fairly good selection of pub-grub. (wholesome, tasty but certainly not gourmet)

That said most films are shot in multiple locations so it would not surprise me to learn of three or four similar locations.

The way they breed like rabbits concerns many, but supposedly only one fifth of the population actually want to abolish the monarchy – but watch that percent shoot up if the Clown Prince takes over.

I personally think they are irrelevant and can stay in place provided they are self funding and pay full death duties on everything including the stuff they have salted-away overseas.

I don’t care either way for the royal fambo, but boy do I like a military band and pomp. So I’ll keep them just for the that.

I don’t even mind the £8m or whatever it will cost us for policing it. It would only be – -spent- waisted somewhere else.

Though the royals are probably the only people, that take more benifit especially than MPs. At least they don’t them moan about the people on benifits like MPs do, With out realising they are just posh benifit scroungers. After all they do little, and draw a lot form the pic coffers, while moaning that to many are framing £80 a fortnight! A little side issue I have with MPs.

‘Boy meets girl?’ Both a lot of years away from that. I am not a conspiracy theorist, just offering my own take on all the hysteria generated by what I see as a simple distraction from political and economic events in the UK. It does not just apply to Harry and his 36 yo beau btw: the Royals and their doings have long been almost worshipped as super-celebs and minor gods. It amuses me when one or more of them complain about exposure and privacy. Give it all up and leave the life! But leave your easy living behind.

I would not turn a blind eye to any of my grandchildren doing some of the dumb things that Harry has done. I praise them when they deserve it, but I criticise when they need it, which is rarely. It’s tough love. I am not a racist either: I have friends from different cultures and one of my best mates when growing up is a great bloke, still a good mate, born in Trinidad. Then there’s Victor Lim, who taught me Taoist meditation. Vijay, my mate from an Indian family. Ibrahim, born in Iraq. Cass, born in the Bahamas and back living there. I helped him out recently after the Hurricane destroyed his home. I voted remain and I still believe that the two daftest things the British people ever did was (a) to vote to join the Common Market and (b) to compound that error by voting to leave the EU.

The amount of tourist money that the Royals supposedly bring in to the UK, is just a small percentage of the wealth that the Queen alone possesses. It is also a tiny increment of the tax that multinationals trading in the UK possess, which is something else that needs to be fixed. The Royal ‘events’ and activities such as Trooping The Colour, are more evidence of the way this country looks back instead of forward: and please remember that I am an ex-soldier with 12 years service. I truly believe everything that I said in all those points and I also believe that we would be better served by an elected Head of State who was not a billionaire. No Trump here, please!

I’m not a Royalist believe you me. I think the hype and hysteria on both sides is a waste of time.

But Occam’s razor applies. There are so many assumptions in the distraction theory it’s clearly nonsense. I hear that sort of thing in the Ring O Bells, but it’s usually about people called Tusk, Juncker, Merkel or Macron rather than Windsor.

Let’s all have a day off work and a piss up and get some of those Yankee Dollars in the bank. I can’t see what’s not to like.

She’s only a nominal Head of State Bob with just about zero power. The real elected head-of-state (although indirectly I’ll admit) is the PM and look where that has got us over the years.

Republics are boring, and the only thing of any historical interest in them is generally pre-republic.

I think you underestimate the pull and value of the Royals – a subjective calculation – been to Russia a couple of times and my associates there are very much neo-Soviets, but all love our Royal Family (and Winston Churchill) – mad but true.

I’d be worried if the monarch had any power, but as an excuse for an occasional national knees up and dragging a few tourists in – I say “as you were”.

First thing I said when I started reading the Metro on the train the other day, 10 pages of “Royal Wedding”. Yesterday, 1/2 page of the latest atrocity this government has committed in Brexit.

I’m with the republicans an conspiracy theorists all the way on this.

Ed: I am neither a Brexiteer nor a Royalist (you may have gathered that already!) but that fits the conspiracy theory I have been labelled with. ???

Been away all day, driving about in heavy snow showers down the East Coast. Here in East Lindsey we had the worst of it, but it became half-rain about 3 pm, the slush is now freezing and I have to venture out again tomorrow. Happy days! Discovered that the Tucson Auto will spin its wheels on frozen slush if I don’t pull away slowly, so I drove accordingly*. Idiots on the A16 going too fast and spinning out, 2 in a Dyke, several on the verges. Blizzard conditions, several white-outs and some muppets without lights on. One day of snow, people forget how to drive according to the conditions.

Glad I started this Thread, some interesting P’sOV. Welcome to the Club, D-Dan!

*Strangely enough, the C-Max did that too….
